100% permanent position as Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Digital Art, Department of Game Devlopment - Game School.

The Department of Game Development – Game School is part of the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. Our campus is located in Hamar, Norway near the beautiful lake Mjøsa, and is connected to an industry-standard motion capture studio and a state-of-the-art VR Centre.

At the Department, we are more than 14 enthusiastic teachers supported by a growing number of contract employees. We have an international vision, putting students at the heart of what we do. Our Department offers industry focused courses in Game Technology and Simulation, Animation and game related Digital Art, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Gamification. The department currently has 280 students enrolled in our Bachelor’s Degree in Game Technology and Simulation, the Bachelor’s Degree in Animation and Digital Art and an Add-on program in Virtual and Augmented Reality. Based on an interdisciplinary approach the study program forms a comprehensive craft-centric unit, preparing students for extensive collaborative productions. Besides education, the school plays a major role in fostering an agile game community through its events and activities. These include the Global Game Jam Hamar, attracting over 240 participants in 2018. There is also a vibrant exchange with numerous local indie game startups having their roots in our education programs.

VR/AR and game companies are important for the development of the region. The university is receiving significant support from our local authorities as well as private companies. In May 2018 the University, together with EON Reality Norway and other companies opened an interactive digital center for VR and motion capture called PARK.

Job description

The position will entail work linked to teaching, supervision and research in Motion Graphics, VR, AR, 3D modeling and rigging and related areas within the study programs. The teaching assigned to the position will comprise teaching and supervision mainly for bachelor’s degree students, but there might also be teaching of master’s degree students. Other research and teaching duties linked to projects and commissions may arise.

The person employed shall contribute to the further development of the department's study programs, research profile and academic community, in addition to entering extensive research/development projects.

Qualifications

The preferred applicant must have experience in practice and carried out their own productions. Expertise and knowledge about the production pipeline in the contemporary videogame industry will be regarded as positive. It is also desirable that the applicant has professional experience in videogame development and is able to transfer this competence into new contexts.

Emphasis is on the applicant’s ability to reflect around his/her subject areas, experience in applied research, collaboration with the games and/or animation industry, businesses and commercialization, as well as teaching experience.

The person employed shall contribute to the further development of the department’s study programs, research profile and academic community, in addition to entering extensive research/development projects.

Preferred experience, development and/or research in Digital Art within:

  • Videogames (for example serious games, entertainment, edutainment, VR and AR, engineering, education)
  • Concept Art
  • Motion Graphics
  • VR and AR
  • 3D modeling and rigging

A doctoral degree or equivalent qualification in the subject area is required for employment as Associate Professor. Applicants with a master’s degree may have their work and experience evaluated in relation to the criteria for Assistant Professor. In addition, documentation of relevant practical pedagogical competence based on education or teaching and supervision is required. New members of staff in teaching and research positions have to attend a compulsory internal course in higher education pedagogy (15 credits) if they do not already have adequate pedagogical education. The person employed must have professional working proficiency in English, both oral and written. The teaching and working language will be in both English and Norwegian. For international employees lectures can be held in English. The add-on programin Virtual and Augmented Reality will be taught in English.

Personal qualities

Personal suitability is important, especially good abilities in creating, taking part in and carrying out processes and academic development. The candidate must also contribute to collaboration with both internal and external partners. Special qualifications in teaching andpedagogical activity are desirable.

We offer

The position is remunerated according to code 1011/1198 Associate Professor or 1008 Assistant Professor, salary level 60-70 on the Norwegian State salary scale, currently NOK 509 100 - 613 500 per year. Previous work experience will be taken into account when deciding placement on the salary scale. For especially qualified candidates higher remuneration may be considered. Personal insurance is included. A percentage of the salary will be deducted each month as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
