The Department of Cultural Studies and Languages, which is part of the Faculty of Arts and Education, is responsible for the University's new lector programme and practical pedagogical education. The Institute also offers programmes in Nordic, English, Religion and History as well as Master's programmes in History with Didactics, Nordic with Literacy Studies and English Literacy Studies. In cooperation with other departments at the faculty, the Department of Cultural Studies and Languages offers a doctoral education in Literacy Studies. There are currently 70 employees and 890 students at the department.

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a temporary position as University Lecturer of English Didactics, Literature and Culture at the Department of Cultural Studies and Languages in the Faculty of Arts and Education. The position is vacant from 01 August 2019 until 31. July 2020.

Duties and academic community

The academic field for the position is English-language literature and culture.

As a university lecturer, you will primarily teach and guide students from first-year to MA level within English didactics, literature and literary studies, including supervision and examination work. These courses may include: Didactics courses related to English-language literature, BA-level introductory courses on literature and culture, upper-level BA courses on specialized topics in literary studies, MA courses on literary and cultural theory and criticism, and the supervision of BA and MA theses. Therefore, in addition to a general competence in English-language literature, the candidate should preferably have a strong background in a recognized subfield of literary studies (a historical period, aesthetic movement, etc.), and/or within English didactics.

The development/use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation and academic/artistic development work, will be included in the position. The job description gives a more detailed account of the subject area and relevant duties for University Lecturers.

Qualification requirements

We are seeking a university lecturer with a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the subject area.

The teacher-training program is expanding and is a priority for the department. Therefore, a large part of this position will involve teaching courses in didactics and the teaching of literature in the lector program, as well as supervising teacher-training students. Research and teaching experience in English didactics (TESL / TEFL), with an emphasis on the teaching of literature and culture, is desirable, as is experience teaching academic writing.

Applicants with a specialisation within English or American literature will be preferred, but applicants specialising in related areas may also be considered.

The appointee must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills related to higher education. He or she must also have teaching experience from lower levels in the Norwegian school system.

  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others.
  • Good teamwork, communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive working environment.

The language of instruction is English. Because the appointee will be involved in teaching at the Lector programme, he or she must have a good command of oral and written Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (Swedish or Danish).

General information

Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity, and documented teaching competence. The committee will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.

Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

Education

  • Contribute to the development of academically strong and relevant education programmes.
  • Further development and strengthening of the education programmes’ reputation by providing high-quality teaching and support at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level.
  • Contribute to and develop relevant further education and continuing education courses.
  • Facilitate students’ learning in line with the learning objectives of the study programmes.
  • Drive forward pedagogical development work and the production of educational aids.
  • Participate in continuous training processes related to teaching and support.
  • Contribute to the development of new teaching methods and the use of different digital learning resources.
  • Carry out student evaluations and drive forward the continuous development of course quality.

Dissemination and interface with the public and private sectors

  • Disseminate research results in Norwegian and international publications.
  • Engage in popular scientific dissemination.
  • Contribute to academically recognised conferences, nationally and internationally.
  • Participate in academic and social debate.
  • Contribute to the development of partnerships with society and the labour force.
  • Build and nurture a broad network with the private and public sector, both nationally and internationally.

Administration

  • Participate in academic strategic work and in the development of new teaching subjects/disciplines.
  • Facilitate examinations and participate in assessments.
  • Participate on expert committees and internal assessment committees.
  • Hold posts in national and international committees, as well as in UiS boards and commitees.

The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in other faculty activities and to be able to perform tasks across departments and faculties.

An annual plan for future work will be established following discussion between the head of the department and associate professor, in accordance with the university's guidelines for work-planning.
