About the position

A permanent 10 % position as Professor/Associate Professor in Marine conservation science is available at the University of Agder, at the Department of Natural Sciences. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is negotiable between the applicant and the Faculty.

The Department of Natural Sciences presently has about 43 employees teaching and doing research in biology, bioengineering and natural sciences in teacher education programs.

The position is part of the department’s strategy for developing a new research group in marine ecology. The research will be conducted largely in cooperation with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

Responsibilities

The Professor/Associate Professor is expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students and to further develop the newly established MSc and PhD-program in coastal ecology.

To fulfill the academic profile of the staff, we seek expertise in the understanding of the dynamic and connectivity of populations of fish, lobster and further important species in the coastal zone. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in population dynamics and ecology, life-history theory and its practical applications, data and statistical analysis, laboratory manipulation and common-garden experiments, and practical field experience. The candidate is expected to have experience from leading large inter-disciplinary research projects and science advisory committees. The candidate is also expected to have an excellent understanding and scientific research record of anthropogenic environmental impacts on aquatic ecosystems, especially fishes, including effects of fisheries.

It is expected that the Professor/Associate Professor will work with colleagues and contribute to a further development of the marine research group at UiA.

Required qualifications

The criteria of employment are pursuant to the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

The applicant must hold a PhD with specialization in marine ecology or a related field.

The applicant must have peer-reviewed published research on the following topics:

• adaptive capacity of organisms to respond to environmental change at multiple organismal scales, including the transcriptome, genome, individuals, and populations
• fish population dynamics, fish population biology, and the sustainable exploitation of fisheries, and
• life-history evolution and reaction norms in fishes

The applicant must have documented experience in the provision of science advice to decision-makers, including managers, policy makers, and parliamentarians.

Applicants must be able to document relevant teaching competence based on education and/or practical experience. If the candidate lacks basic teaching competence, it will be required that she/he obtain such qualifications, or complete UiA’s Foundation Course in Education for University Lecturers, within a period of two years.

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

The languages of instruction are Norwegian/Scandinavian and English.

Applicants who do not speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are expected to acquire the necessary proficiency to lecture in Norwegian. The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian and facilitates participation in such courses. Permanently employed staff is expected to acquire good command of oral and written Norwegian within a period of two years, and this is to be documented by passing the Bergenstest.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1013 Professor, gross salary per year for a 100 % position NOK 611 700-910 900 or code 1011 Associate Professor, gross salary per year for a 100 % position NOK 490 900-650 200. Higher salary may be offered to applicants with superior qualifications. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
