About the position

A permanent 10 % position as Professor/Associate Professor in Fish Behavioral Physiology is available at the University of Agder, at the Department of Natural Sciences. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

The Department of Natural Sciences presently has about 43 employees teaching and researching biology, bioengineering and natural sciences in teacher education programs.

The position is part of the department’s strategy for developing a new research group in marine ecology. The research will be conducted largely in cooperation with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

Responsibilities

Our new colleague is expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students and to further develop the newly established MSc and PhD program in coastal ecology.

The position will focus on the capability of natural and farmed anadromous fish populations to adapt to their local environments and to ongoing/forecasted environmental change. This requires understanding in how coping mechanisms, elicited by natural and anthropogenic perturbations, is linked to evolutionary processes. The applicants must thus possess expertise in physiological, neuroendocrine and behavioral stress coping mechanisms and how they are by affected environmental and nutritional factors. Moreover, expertise in field and lab behavioral studies are required. Thus, skillfulness in video tracking and telemetry techniques is expected. We expect candidates with an excellent tracking record of attracting external funding and who are productive in their ability to publish in international peer reviewed journals.

Required qualifications

The criteria of employment are pursuant to the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

It is expected that the Professor/Associate Professor will work with colleagues and contribute to further development of the marine research group at UiA.

The applicant must hold a PhD with specialization in behavioral neuroendocrinology with specific focus on behavioral and physiological stress reactions in salmonid fish.

Applicants must be able to document relevant teaching competence based on education and/or practical experience. If the candidate lacks basic teaching competence, it will be required that she/he obtains such qualifications, or complete UiA’s Foundation Course in Education for University Lecturers, within a period of two years.

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

The languages of instruction are Norwegian/Scandinavian and English.

Applicants who do not speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are expected to acquire the necessary proficiency to lecture in Norwegian. The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian and facilitates participation in such courses. Permanently employed staff is expected to acquire good command of oral and written Norwegian within two years, and this is to be documented by passing the Bergenstest.

It is expected that the new colleague has a successful record in providing external funding, and the will to work with colleagues in developing the marine research group at UiA further. The candidates are also expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students, introduce them to interaction and experimental work and to further develop the marine part of the newly established joint master's program in coastal ecology.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1013 Professor, gross salary per year for a 100 % position NOK 611 700-910 900 or code 1011 Associate Professor, gross salary per year for a 100 % position NOK 490 900-650 200. Higher salary may be offered to applicants with superior qualifications. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
