A permanent position as Professor/Associate Professor in Pharmacology is available from January 2019 at the University of Tromso – The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacology Research Group.

The Faculty of Health Sciences has ten departments; Medical Biology, Community Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Dentistry, Psychology, Health and Care Sciences and Child and Adolescent Mental Health, School of sport sciences and Soscial Education.

The Department of Pharmacy has seven research groups: Pharmacology, Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Transport and Delivery, Clinical pharmacy and Pharmaco-epidemiology, Microbiology, Computational Pharmacology and Infection biology. The Department has 32 permanent positions. In addition there is a variable number of PhD student-, Post.Doc.- and part time positions. The Department is responsible for a bachelor- and a master program in pharmacy. Teaching is given at both undergraduate and graduate level. The research groupThe Pharmacology research group currently consists of one professor, one associate professor, one postdoc, one Phd student and two technicians. The focus of the research activity is cellular signalling and regulation of gene expression in the context of cell migration and metastasis, with aim to improve therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who will add strength and expertise in the field of cancer research to the department. The successful candidate will join an active research group focusing on cellular signalling and the regulation of gene expression in the context of cancer cell migration and metastasis. The candidate will be expected to have independent research projects related to molecular aspects of pharmacology and/or cancer, and to be capable of attracting external research funding. He/she will also be expected to contribute to both the scientific direction and development of the research group. The successful candidate will teach pharmacology and related topics at undergraduate and post graduate level and contribute to the further development of teaching within these fields. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the development of the pharmacy curriculum in general.

Required qualifications

The applicant should have a masters level degree in Pharmacy, Molecular Biology or a related discipline, a PhD and research track record within molecular pharmacology and/or molecular aspects of cancer. Candidates with a masters degree in pharmacy will be prioritized if scientifically qualified. Candidates with other relevant background and appropriate research experience are also welcome to apply. Experience of practical laboratory work (wet-lab) and modern methodology in Biochemistry/Molecular/Cell biology is mandatory. A very good track record in research, exemplified by publications of high quality, and the (potential) ability to attract external funding is an advantage. Experience in teaching pharmacology and/or related topics at undergraduate and post graduate level is required.

Professor: To be awarded a professorship, the candidate must document a substantial amount of high-quality research corresponding to requirements of the national competence guidelines for the assessment of professor competence. Pedagogic qualifications need to be documented.

Associate Professor: For the position of associate professor, a relevant Norwegian doctorate degree is required, or a corresponding international doctorate degree which is recognised as equal to the Norwegian degree, or competence documented through academic work of an equivalent scope and quality. Pedagogic qualifications need to be documented.

For a permanent position as Associate Professor, the following documentation will be considered as important:

  • Independent research after Ph.D*.
  • Experience with applications for external research funding**
  • Completed stays abroad and national/international research networks.***

*Documented with scientific publications without Ph.D - supervisors as co-authors.** Filing independent grant applications. The evaluation of the grant application, if provided, may indicate the quality of the application in a competitive field whether or not external funding was obtained. Contribution to larger applications, if documented, is also positive. ***Scientific cooperation, nationally and/or internationally, should be documented through joint publications and/or application work.

Requirements for pedagogical qualificationsAll teaching and research positions at UiT require documented pedagogical qualifications, in the form of an approved teaching portfolio (http://result.uit.no/uniped/about-teaching-portfolios/?lang=en).

The teaching language is Norwegian and the applicant must have a good command of Norwegian (or Swedish or Danish). Any non-Norwegian speaking appointees is expected to manage Norwegian at a level equivalent to "Bergen test level 2B" and must be able to teach in Norwegian within two years after employment.

Working and payment conditions

The successful candidate is obliged to make a contribution to the teaching of all students at the Faculty of Health Sciences as and where necessary, to comply with the teaching guidelines and also to take part in examinations work, without specific compensation.

The successful candidate must also be willing to engage in the ongoing development of their Department and the University as a whole.

The distribution of time between teaching and research responsibilities is flexible and is assigned on an individual basis. For all academic staff, 5% of one’s working hours are set aside for administrative tasks as standard. Thereafter, the main rule for the distribution of working hours is as follows:

  • Professor/Associate Professor: up to 50% devoted to research and 50% to teaching, after time spent on other tasks has been deducted.

Any time-restricting deviations from the standard working hours shall also be described.

Permanent employees in positions such as Professor or Associate Professor may apply for paid sabbatical terms, cf. guidelines for the assignment of sabbatical leave.

The remuneration for Professors is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1013

The remuneration for Associate Professors is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011

A compulsory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee’s mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants’ qualifications based on the application documents and the text of the announcement.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall, among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.

In the event that there are no suitably qualified applicants for the position, an interim appointment for a period of no more than three years may be made, cf. section 6-5 (1) of the Act relating to universities and university colleges.

In the event of an interim appointment on the basis of lacking scientific qualifications, applications for a permanent position with a new assessment must be made before the three-year period elapses. The appointment will become permanent in the event that the applicant is then found to be suitably qualified.

In the event of an interim appointment on the basis of lacking teaching qualifications, the applicant must, over the course of the three-year period, gain approved teaching qualifications through the development of a teaching portfolio. The appointment will become permanent in the event that the applicant is then found to be suitably qualified.
