About the position

General

The Department of Arctic Geology at UNIS invites applications for an Adjunct (Associate) Professor (20%) position in glacial hydrology to complement its educational and research profile.

UNIS provides education and carries out scientific research based in Svalbard within the high Arctic, and benefits greatly from this geographical location. Approximately half of the staff and students are from abroad, and all teaching is in English. UNIS is located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, with very good access to modern laboratories and equipment. Currently the department constitutes 4 professors, 3 associate professors, 3 PhD students and 7 in adjunct staff positions. UNIS carries significant responsibilities in research and education, with a curriculum that includes training of Master and Doctorate students. The importance of field studies is stressed at all levels throughout the teaching programs.

Description of the vacant position

The successful candidate will contribute to the education and supervision of students in the field of arctic physical geography in particular within glacial hydrology. The candidate is expected to be course responsible for the AG-340 ‘Arctic Glacier and Meltwater Dynamics’ course, which is held every other year, and contribute to the bachelor program in physical geography (ie AG-204 “The physical Geography of Svalbard” and AG-221 “Arctic Physical Geographical Field Techniques”). Options for expanding AG-340 to include PhD student could also be explored.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate with expertise in the following research areas:

  • Experience with monitoring water quantity and quality in proglacial rivers
  • Meltwater solute and sediment transport, and their biogeochemical significance.
  • Surface energy balance to modelling and/or runoff modelling in Arctic watersheds subject to seasonal snow and perennial ice cover.
  • Understanding of Arctic glacial hydrology and its empirical characterization through the observation of meltwater dynamics.

Applicants for the position must be able to document their qualifications as Full or Associate Professor. To be considered for the position of Associate Professor a Ph.D. in an appropriate field, or its equivalent, is the minimum requirement. Professor qualifications must be documented as UNIS does not evaluate applicants for professorships. Remember to include teaching experience in the application.

The candidate should be able to contribute to the presentation of UNIS internationally through his/her role in the international scientific projects and research networks. Prior connection to glacial hydrology research around Svalbard and to UNIS is considered an advantage. Arctic fieldwork experience, especially from Svalbard, is also desired due to the strong fieldwork focus at UNIS.

Employment Conditions

The vacant position is 20 %, for a fixed term of 4 years within the Arctic Geology department. The position may be renewed after 4 years, subject to agreement by both parties.

All scientific staff is responsible for planning the content of their primary subject and must make all necessary arrangements with external guest lecturers, as well as preparing for, and coordinating, the stays of guest-lecturers coming to Svalbard. All faculty members are also responsible for budget compliance and financial follow-up for their primary subject and for providing continuity of contact with the students in their primary course. They must also provide assistance in handling these tasks in secondary courses assigned to them.

The successful candidate is expected to take an active part in the advancement of his/her field of research and must also be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.

Salary

All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government’s University salary scale. The position as professor follows code 1013, and is normally remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 123 860 to per year.

The position as associate professor follows code 1011, and is normally remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 102 960 to NOK 129 260 per year. In special cases a higher salary step can be considered. UNIS will provide accommodation in Longyearbyen during the stays related to the work for UNIS. Travel costs will be refunded.

The field of expertise of all applicants will be evaluated in relation to the existing plans and research profiles of the department (see our web pages at www.unis.no). A committee will evaluate the qualifications of the applicants. Based on the report, the top ranked person(s) will be invited for a trial lecture and an interview. The appointment will be made by the Board of UNIS, based on the recommendation from the evaluation committee, interview committee and the UNIS appointment committee. As UNIS would like to increase the percentage of females in academic positions, women are especially invited to apply.
