There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Psychosocial Science from 1 January 2019. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years and is affiliated with the project AlerT: Awareness Learning Tools for Data Sharing Everywhere, funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The Faculty of Psychology offers professional education for psychologists, is responsible for the pedagogical training of the University of Bergen's own staff, contributes towards the pedagogical aspects of teacher training and offers degrees in a wide range of disciplines: child welfare, health promotion work, pedagogics, special education, psychology, work and organisational psychology, and speech and language therapy. The Faculty's main focus areas in respect of research are connected with health, learning, development-related research and basic research in its widest sense.

The academic activities at the Department of Psychosocial Science (ISP) are wide ranging and of a high international standard. ISP conducts research and training within a range of basic disciplines such as cognitive psychology, social psychology, development psychology, personality psychology, and within user areas such as school and tuition psychology, work and organisational psychology and social psychology. ISP has six research groups, and many employees are involved in research groups at other departments.

The successful candidate will be part of the research group DICE-Lab (Bergen Laboratory for the Study of Decision, Intuition, Consciousness, and Emotion). The research group’s focus is on basic and applied research within the field of cognitive psychology. The research conducted in the group deals with the question of how everyday decisions, judgements, reasoning and behaviour are directed by a complex interplay between conscious and unconscious processes, and are influenced by intuition, emotion, or deliberate processes.

About the project and work tasks:

The project is concerned with e-privacy, that is, with privacy issues in relation to the sharing of personal information in digital environments. It consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers from psychology, information and computer science, and education. The aim of the project is to develop tools for raising awareness about e-privacy among the public. In a serious games environment, users will practice and make choices in scenarios, and receive instructive feedback based on their choices.

The task of the postdoc is to conduct psychological experiments in the context of the serious games environment. The aim of the experiments is to investigate risk perception and decision making processes concerning the sharing of personal information. The postdoc will be involved in and have a central role in all parts of the research process. This includes:

  • developing research questions within the research project
  • conducting experimental studies
  • conducting data analyses
  • contributing as first and co-author to scientific publications

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must at the time of applying have successfully defended their Ph.D. in psychology or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in cognitive psychology, preferably in the areas of judgment, risk perception, and decision making.
  • Competence in quantitative data analysis and experimental research designs.
  • Experience in research on serious games or virtual environments is an advantage.
  • Experience with publishing in international (English) peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • The position requires proficiency in both written and oral English.

About the position as postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is three years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

  • Salary at pay grade 57 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 1) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to a gross annual salary of NOK 490,900. The state salary scale is under yearly adjustment due to negotiations and will be updated. Any further increases in salary will be made in accordance with the service increments that apply to this position. A higher salary may be considered for particularly highly qualified applicants.
