The department of Arctic Biology seeks candidates for a 2 year Postdoctoral research fellow in marine biology. Currently the department consists of three professors, four associate professors, nine adjunct professors, five PhDs and two technical/administrative staff. The department conducts research and education in Arctic marine and terrestrial biology, and currently provides 22 courses on bachelor, master and PhD level. The department focuses on an integrated approach to High Arctic biology, and field studies and field safety are important in research and education. Our education is research-based and we have a strong focus on educational quality in a Centre of Excellent Education (SFU, see www.bioceed.no). Description of the vacant position and qualifications

This position focuses on Arctic marine ecosystems and climate change. Zooplankton and meroplankton will be targeted and we seek a candidate with expertise on zooplankton biodiversity, population dynamics, trophic ecology and physiology. The work will involve field and experimental work, and we look for candidates with practical skills and experience with different feeding and ocean acidification experiments. We are looking for strongly motivated candidates. An integrated approach to Arctic ecology and evolution will be regarded as advantageous. Relevant practical experience from marine fieldwork, use of molecular genetic tools and good statistical skills will be emphasized along with personal suitability. It is important that the appointed person has the ability to work independently and in team, and has a positive attitude and flexibility.The position is affiliated with the research project The Nansen Legacy (http://nansenlegacy.org) and the research project De-icing of the Arctic coast; critical or new opportunities for marine biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (ACCES) (https://www.biodiversa.org/1400) (see below for more information on these projects).

The Nansen Legacy is the Norwegian Arctic research community’s joint effort to establish a holistic understanding of a changing marine Arctic climate and ecosystem. The project will provide a scientific knowledgebase needed for future sustainable resource management in the transitional Barents Sea and the adjacent Arctic Basin. It is a collaborative project between 10 Norwegian research institutions, and will run from 2018-2023. Activities in the project will include international cooperation, and several cruises with the new, ice-going research vessel Kronprins Haakon. In the ACCES project we will study Arctic coastal ecosystemswith and without seasonal sea ice cover. The project will run from 2019-2021 and is a highly international collaborative project, led by UNIS, with focus on coastal studies in Svalbard, Canada, USA and Greenland.

The positions require a doctoral degree in marine biology or other relevant disciplines. Moreover, the candidates should show a good command of English, both spoken and written. International experience is considered an advantage.

Employment conditions for post doc positions at UNIS

The duration of the Post Doc position is 2 years. The employment includes fieldwork and potentially some supervision duties of Master students. In addition, there may also be some short research visits with national / international collaborators.

SalaryAll salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government’s University salary scale. Post doctoral research fellows start at a gross salary of NOK 514 800 annually. The salary will depend on experience/seniority. As a resident in Svalbard an annual allowance of NOK 34 560 (Svalbardtillegg) will be added to the salary. A Social Security contribution of 2 per cent, to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, will be deducted from the salary. Income tax on Svalbard is 8 per cent, plus 8,2 per cent toward National Insurance coverage. UNIS offers a membership in the Norwegian Public Pension Fund.
