UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT – Developing the High North

UiT
is a multi-campus research univeristy in Norway and the northernmost university of the world. Our central location in the High North, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio, and our interdisciplinary qualities make us uniquely suited to meet the challenges of the future. At UiT you can explore global issues from a close-up perspective.

Credibility, academic freedom, closeness, creativity and commitment shall be hallmarks of the relationship between our employees, between our employees and our students and between UiT and our partners.

Department of Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences is a very active research center in the high North of Europe. It focuses on three research directions: Marine Geology and Geophysics, Solid Earth Science, and Coastal and Terrestrial Geosciences. The open position will associated with the Solid Earth Science group.

You will carry out microstructural research on experimentally and naturally deformed samples in collaboration with Holger Stunitz. The department owns a Zeiss Merlin FE-SEM with EBSD, EDS, WDS, and CL detectors. Maintenance and daily routines are performed by an engineer. The experimental deformation laboratory at UiT houses 2 solid medium apparatus.

The current research focuses on the interaction of deformation and mineral reactions, wet quartz deformation, and the brittle-viscous transition. You will primarily work on the microstructural characterization of samples using SEM techniques. In addition, experimental work can be carried out in the solid medium deformation lab and in collaboration with the deformation laboratories at ISTO, Université d´Orléans, France (Hugues Raimbourg, Jacques Precigout) and EAPS, MIT, U.S.A. (Matej Pec).
