Stilling:

PostDoc Position in Scientific Computing at Simula Research Laboratory

Application deadline: 01 December 2018

We are searching for candidates for a 2-year PostDoc position in mathematical modelling and optimisation at Simula Research Laboratory, Norway.

Project description

The goal of the project is to simulate and optimize novel cascade bioreactor technologies, developed by the project partners, with the aim to reduce food waste for fish and chicken. Modelling these types of  bioreactors require simulation and optimization in terms of challenging multiphase flow simulations. We will employ the finite element softwares FEniCS and dolfin-adjoint, both developed at Simula, to create a multiphase flow model for cascade bioreactors, and optimize the cascade process towards maximum yield and product quality.

The successful candidate will enjoy an inspiring and interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to engage with a broad range of relevant experts. The position also brings the possibility of travelling to conferences, visiting the national and international partner laboratories, and establishing new collaborations.

Research Environment

Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institution located at Fornebu, just outside the city center of Oslo, the capital of Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 30 countries. Simula is conducting ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. The main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

The candidate will be part of Simula´s Department for Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. The department has long-standing expertise and experience in the field of mathematics, numerical analysis, high-performance computing, and applications in biomedical computing. Within this project, the candidate will work in a collaborative team that includes academic partners at, as well as  industrial representatives.

Simula offers

  • A highly dynamic and motivated team of international researchers and engineers.
  • Collaboration with applied research teams and companies.
  • An informal and inclusive international working environment.
  • A competitive salary.

Application requirements

We are looking for candidates who fulfil one or more of the following requirements:

  • A PhD degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, artificial intelligence, or engineering.
  • A strong interest in applied mathematical modelling and optimization.
  • Experience with computational modeling of physical systems, numerical methods for partial differential equations, advanced programming techniques or parallel computing.

The starting date is 1st January, 2019 or later. The application deadline is 1st December 2018. Applications will be screened continuously and a decision will be made as soon as we have found the right candidate. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
