About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as Phd Research Fellow in Big Data Analytics for Green Ships from 01.01.2020.

The position is at the Department of Maritime Operations and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold.

University of South-Eastern Norway

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses.

The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

While big data analytics has huge potential to solve various optimization problems for green ships, it is not widely used yet in maritime industries due to both technical and organizational challenges. The main objective of this position is to identify these challenges and suggest solutions, and consequently, to contribute to utilize and manage big data analytics for green ships.

This position is funded by A. Wilhelmsen Foundation that provides financial support to research and education at Norwegian colleges and univerisities, particularly in economics, corporate governance and the maritime sector. Regular report meetings with the foundation board are required.

The candidate will become part of the interdisiplinary Maritime Safety, Digitalization, Leadership and Innovation (MASDLI) research group (https://masdli.usn.no) and regularly interact with the groups' members.

The appointment is for at term of four years with 25 % departmental duties, mainly teaching and supervision at the master program in maritime management. Teaching duties at the bachelor level might also be included.

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have completed a Master's degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in marine engeneering, maritime management, data analytics or equivalent. The applicant should have good academic performances (with an average grade B or better), and a genuine interest and motivation for performing research, and must have gained the degree within the application deadline. The Master's degree should be recognized as equivalent to a 2-year Norwegian Master's degree.

Qualified applicants should also have teaching and supervising experience at the master's level. inderdisciplinary academic background in business administration and engineering, and maritime experience would be highly regarded. Addition to the formal qulifications, personal qulifications, motivation and interest in the project will be emphasized.

Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language will be an advantage.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 479 600 a year. Further promotion will be based on service in the position. In special cases, employment code 1378 may be considered. Salary NOK 479 600 - 615 900 a year. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee's salary to the state pension plan.
