The University of Agder, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Information Systems invites applications for one full-time PhD Research Fellow in Information Systems for a period of three years, alternatively four years with 25% of the time assigned to tasks at the Faculty’s discretion. The position is located in Kristiansand, Norway.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has approximately 110 employees and 1700 students and comprises the following four departments: Department of Information Systems, Department of Political Science and Management, Department of Global Development and Planning, and Department of Sociology and Social Work.
Description of the position
The position is affiliated with the Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM) at the University of Agder, which is an interdisciplinary research centre focusing on how information and communication technologies can support innovative practices in emergency preparedness and response. The centre involves 20 researchers with expertise in information systems, computer science and social sciences. At the core of CIEM’s research is collection, integration, analysis and presentation of data from different sources, as a basis for enhanced information sharing, situational awareness and decision-support in emergency response. This includes both data from various sensors and human-generated data from social media. An overall goal of CIEM is to contribute to strengthening societal security and community resilience. The candidate is expected to contribute to CIEM’s research on analysis, integration and use of information in emergency preparedness and response. Particular emphasis is on the role of social media both as a potential source for relevant information, and as a medium for effective information sharing between emergency stakeholders and the public. The candidate will be invited to participate in a European RISE project on social media analytics for society and crises, involving collaboration with an international network of universities. This will involve some international travel for project workshops and research visits and give the candidate a possibility to build a good network.
The candidate should have expertise in one or more of the following research areas:
- Social media analytics
- Crisis communication
- Decision support
- Data integration and visualisation
- Situational awareness
Understanding of socio-cultural factors influencing adoption and use of the technological solutions is also considered important.

The applicants must qualify for admission to the PhD programme specialisation in Information Systems and must hold a master’s degree in information systems or equivalent with an average mark of B or better. Applicants must submit a project proposal whose scope lies within the abovementioned research areas. The project proposal should comprise a maximum of ten pages, including the reference list. The proposal must contain a preliminary presentation of the research problem, theoretical foundation, methodological approach and planned progression for the doctoral project. The quality of the project proposal will receive a high level of consideration during the application assessment process.
The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. During the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised. Fluency in written and oral English is a prerequisite. The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449.400. A 2% compulsory pension contribution will be deducted and paid to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund according to current statutory provisions.
