The Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research activities are provisionally organized into the groups of Living Marine Resources, Food science, Fish Health, Marine Drug Discovery, Marine Resource Management and Development, Environmental and Resource Economics.

Marine resource economics (MRØ) currently includes six faculty members and 10 PhD students and 1 postdoc researcher. The group develops and applies bioeconomic modeling, evaluation approaches, behavior theories and econometric analysis to address the challenges and problems related to the natural resources and environment/ecosystems, especially marine resources like fisheries and aquaculture, and the evaluation of ecosystem services. For example, our research topics span from single resources, like cod, and single industry, like the cod fisheries and the oil industry, to the relationship between industries, how they affect and are affected by the ecosystem as a whole. Additionally, we study how to capture values that are not easily detected in the market: what is a fishing trip in the midnight sun worth, for instance?

The project

The PhD project is for those who are interested in applying economic theory(ies) and approach(es) to study the use and management of marine resources and ecosystems. Particularly a PhD Researcher who is interested in developing bioeconomic models which can be built on either empirical observations or economic theories.

The bioeconomic models as tools can be used to investigate various issues related to marine resource uses. For instance, they can be used to evaluate how management strategies affect marine resource users’ behavior (e.g., fishers or farmers) and their harvest decisions, or to assess the consequences of specific policy instruments, or even to evaluate particular problems related to marine resource or environment (e,g., pollution, climate change, use conflicts).
