The position

UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a PhD position in Computer Science vacant for a candidate committed to take the degree of Philosophy Doctor (PhD). The position is organized under the Department of Computer Science and is part of the multidisciplinary project “Befolkningsundersøkelser i nord. The Department of Computer Science


The Department of Computer Science provides a strong international research environment with 13 tenured faculty members, 4 adjunct professors, 4 post doctors and researchers, 7 technical/ administrative staff members and about 20 PhD students. The goal of the Department is to advance the research and teaching of computer science as a discipline, to demonstrate leadership within our areas of interest, and to contribute to society through our education, research and dissemination.


The Medical Informatics and Telemedicine (MI&T) group studies medical- and health-related computer science issues within the broader area of health informatics and digital medicine, including self-management systems for people with diabetes, smartphone-based social media applications and serious computer games for people with diabetes, motivational mechanisms in e-health, electronic disease and health surveillance, medical sensor systems, patient modelling, enhanced patient interaction through ICT, telemedicine systems in homes and telemedicine services in remote areas. All projects are done in cooperation with, or closely connected to, Norwegian Centre for E-health Research, University Hospital of North Norway.

This computer science position is within the sub-project “Storskala infrastruktur for selvrapporterte data” (“Large-scale infrastructure for self-reported data”), which focuses on research and development of infrastructures for large-scale monitoring, recording, storage and analysis of self-reported health, lifestyle and biological data.

The appointment is for a period of four years for a candidate with knowledge, skills and will to successfully complete the PhD study within the time frame. The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research education to the level of a doctoral degree.

Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the Faculty of Science and Technology’s organized research training.

The research project: Large-scale infrastructure for self-reported data

The research project covers a common need for collecting continuous health data from as many people as possible, from different sources of data, and as long as possible in relation to the Tromsø population study (Tromsøundersøkelsen), m-health research on diabetes and research in statistical analysis and modeling of diabetes. The infrastructure will contribute to increased use of data and research into lifestyle and public diseases.

The main advisor for the PhD project will be Professor Gunnar Hartvigsen, Department of Computer Science, UiT, with co-advisor Professor Eirik Årsand, Norwegian Centre for E-health Research, University Hospital of North Norway.

Qualifications

This position requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science. It will be preferable with knowledge of relevance to the project as described above. The master’s dissertation must be included in the application. Candidates in the final phase of their Master study may apply. A preliminary version of the dissertation can be included if the final version is not ready before the application deadline. Information about the delivery deadline for the dissertation should be given. A completed degree must be documented before an acceptable date for commencement.

The position requires admission to the PhD programme. The applicant should in addition be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, available at the same website. Due to public contact in the Tromsø population study, the candidate must possess fluent verbal and written Norwegian communication skills.

Proficiency in the Norwegian language can be documented in the following ways:

  • Diploma from a Norwegian upper secondary school
  • Passed exam in Norwegian as a second language at “VKII” level (3. year)
  • Passed level 3 exam in Norwegian for international students at the universities
  • Passed exam from one year’s university study in Norwegian language and society for international students
  • The Bergen Test: test in Norwegian – higher level. Written test with a minimum of 450 points or a “Pass” (in new grade scale). Those who have Swedish or Danish as a first language and who fulfil the general university and college admission requirements in their native country do not need to take the test.

The normal period of appointment is four years. The PhD study is standardized to three years. The fourth year consists of teaching or other duties for the university, organized according to a distribution formula of 25 % per year in agreement with the Head of Department.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:

  • Master’s thesis or equivalent
  • Publications
  • Any other academic works
  • Knowledge and interest of the specific project and it`s topic

In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD studies, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and experience/education from other types of dissemination.

The applicants assessed as the best qualified can be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.

As many as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.
