One Doctoral Research Fellowship (PhD) within Russian Literature and Culture is available from 1. January 2020 in the Department of Language and Culture at the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway (UiT). The position is affiliated to the research group Russian Space: Concepts, Practices, Representations (RSCPR).

The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation to be publicly defended. The candidate will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organised research training, and the academic work must result in a doctoral thesis aiming to obtain the degree of PhD within the period of employment. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The appointment is a fixed term position for a period of four years.

Affiliation

The position is affiliated with the Department of Language and Culture (ISK). The Department consists of 75 permanent employees, 10 adjunct professors, and approximately 30 PhD fellows. Additionally, the Department has approximately 35 temporary research and teaching positions. The Department’s core activates are research, teaching, and dissemination within linguistics, literature, art history, and media and documentation studies.

The Department has a very active and diverse research profile. It houses one of the world’s most excellent research communities in linguistics, with research groups within cognitive linguistics (CLEAR), Sami language technology (Giellatekno and Divvun), sociolinguistics (LAIDUA), language acquisition (LAVA), and theoretical linguistics (CASTL-FISH). The Department’s research communities within literature, art history, and media and documentation studies are nationally highly competitive, and are organised into research groups such as Health, Art and Society (HAS), Russian Space, WARGAME and ALMPUB.

ISK offers one-year programmes, as well as full Bachelor and Master programmes in the following fields: General linguistics, literature, art history, media and documentation studies, English, Kven, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Sami, Spanish, and German. It also offers PhD programmes in linguistics, cultural/literary studies, art history, as well as media and documentation studies.

The appointed Doctoral Research Fellowship must have her/his daily workplace at the UiT, campus Tromsø.

The position’s field of research/research project

The multilateral cooperation within the Barents Region recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Cultural exchange has played a central role for Norwegian-Russian relations and cooperation during these years, as a multitude of completed regional projects will confirm.

Hundreds of participants on both sides of the border, professionals as well as amateurs, have invested time, energy and resources in this work. Still, the practical significance of the cultural exchange remains a topic for debate. The Ph.D-research shall investigate the interrelationship between political visions, initiatives, and expectations of Norwegian–Russian cultural cooperation in the Barents Region on the one hand, and concrete Norwegian and Russian contributions on the other. The main aim is to achieve a better understanding of the actual processes initiated by the cultural cooperation as well as its predicted and unpredicted impact on Norwegian–Russian relations within and beyond the Barents Region.

The project shall produce new knowledge about the Norwegian–Russian cultural cooperation in the Barents region, focus on influential projects, map progress as well as setbacks and consider the potential impact of the activities on local, regional, national, and international levels.

It can investigate projects one or more fields of culture from within the framework of Barentskult or other parts of the official Barents cooperation and/or formally independent og related cooperation initiatives: graphic and performative art; museums, galleries and curators; music festivals, tours, and exchange of musicians; theatre, drama, literary festivals, seminars, and visiting authors; film screenings and film making; ecumenic and interchurch cooperation.

A 6-12 months stay at a university abroad is encouraged.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD programme, cf. § 6 of UiT PhD regulations. An MA-degree with a minimum average of grade B (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for admission. Moreover, the applicant must prove English language proficiency equivalent to the standards of Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, see PhD Regulations UiT. Since the primary source material is in Russian and Norwegian, the applicant must document proficiency in both languages.

The position requires a Master`s degree in Humanities or Social Sciences, with a certifiable proficiency in Russian language, equivalent to a minimum of 100 (Norwegian) credits of Russian language instruction, including a period abroad, plus relevant courses in Russian literature, culture, history and/or politics. The applicant must be proficient in Norwegian (Swedish or Danish can be considered). The applicant must present a research proposal of max. 10 standard pages, which provides a brief outline of the proposed research project’s scope, theory and method. All documentation must be certified and translated into English or a Scandinavian language in order to be assessed.

Working conditions

The normal period of employment and the nominal length of the PhD programme is four years, including 25% teaching on BA-level. A shorter period of appointment may be decided upon if the applicant has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or if the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the research training amounts to a total of three years.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

  • other academic works, and
  • project description

In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD research. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularisation and experience/education from other types of dissemination.
