PhD position in "Autonomous approaches to in-situ monitoring of early fish life stages"

Deadline: 31.05.2019

SINTEF Ocean has an open PhD position related to the topic:

“Autonomous approaches to in-situ monitoring of early fish life stages”

The PhD position aims to establish and validate new and innovative systems for automated in-situ analyses of early life stages of fish utilising an optimal combination of imaging hardware and software, to strengthen the link to and use of environmental risk-based models, to reduce the need for field observations and campaigns.

SINTEF

SINTEF is one of Europe's largest research organisations, with multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of technology, the natural sciences and the social sciences. SINTEF is an independent foundation and has conducted contract research and development projects for the private and public sectors since 1950. SINTEF has 2000 employees from 75 countries and annual revenues of three billion Norwegian kroner.

Vision: Technology for a better society.

SINTEF Ocean conducts research and innovation related to ocean space for national and international industries. Our ambition is to continue Norways leading position in marine technology and biomarine research. We develop innovative solutions for sustainable use of the ocean in close partnership with industry and government. The company has 340 employees and with headquarters in Trondheim, and offices in Tromsø, Hirtshals, Oslo, Ålesund and Bergen.

The research and development will be applied to both laboratory monitoring and in-situ ecosystem surveys such that eggs and larvae abundance and developmental stages can be monitored and mapped. This will involve both sensor development and data collection using AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles). The PhD candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team at SINTEF Ocean and NTNU AMOS, NTNU Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory (AUR-Lab) and the Marine Biological Association (Plymouth, UK).

Jobb description

§ Sensor development, sensor testing and data collection using AUVs in combination with ship-based imaging systems for rapid, automated analysis of plankton net trawls

§ Development of machine learning approaches to analysis of imaging data

§ Measurements and data interpretation in concert with research activities at SINTEF Ocean, NTNU Centre of Excellence AMOS (Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems), NTNU Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory (AUR-Lab) and the Marine Biological Association (Plymouth, UK)

The PhD candidate will be based at the department of Environment and New Resources at SINTEF Ocean and will be part of the NTNU AMOS PhD student team (currently >100 PhD students).

The candidate will also work closely with researchers at the Marine Biological Association (Plymouth, UK) in developing machine learning approaches to analysis of plankton imaging data.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in marine technology or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

§ Knowledge in basic image analysis and marine ecological monitoring methods, preferably “hands on use” with AUVs (MSc level). Further, a candidate familiar with machine learning for image-based classification is beneficial

§ MSc in marine technology or similar, with knowledge/skills in sensor development and image analysis

§ Experience in both laboratory and cruise work, ability to use new sensors: Hard- and software, implementation on platforms with following interpretation of data

Personal characteristics

§ We seek a candidate that is highly motivated and able to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, have good communication and networking skills and, are proactive and forthcoming, and able to work independently if needed

§ The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem-oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams

§ Curiosity for the unknown

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.
