Open PhD Position in Computational Physiology at Simula Research Laboratory

We are searching for candidates for a 3-year PhD position in cardiovascular modeling at Simula Research Laboratory, Norway.

Project Description

The overall goal of this project is to develop and apply patient-specific mechanical and electromechanical computational modeling frameworks for use in industrial and clinical settings. This will require pushing the limits of modeling methods and cutting-edge optimization techniques to improve their diagnostic resolution and efficiency. The successful candidate will enjoy an inspiring and resourceful environment, with the ability to engage with a broad range of relevant experts. The position also brings the possibility of travelling to conferences, visiting other national or international labs, and establishing new collaborations.

Research Environment

Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institution located at Fornebu, just outside the city center of Oslo, the capital of Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 30 countries. Simula is conducting ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. The main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

This position will integrate with the Center for Cardiological Innovation (CCI), which is a Centre for Research Based Innovation that combines Simula’s computing expertise with cardiologists at Oslo University Hospital and industry leaders at GE Healthcare and Medtronic. Within this project the candidate will work within a collaborative team that includes physicians and industrial representatives, as well as domain experts within scientific computing.

Simula Offers

  • A highly dynamic and motivated team of international researchers and engineers.
  • A well-established collaboration with applied research teams and companies.
  • An informal and inclusive international working environment.
  • Professional courses and workshops led by international experts.
  • A competitive salary.

Application Requirements

We are looking for candidates who fulfill one or more of the following requirements:

  • A strong interest in computational science, non-linear soft-tissue mechanics or biomedical computing
  • A University degree in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, or computational biology
  • Experience with computational modeling of (bio)physical systems, numerical methods for partial differential equations, advanced programming techniques or parallel computing

The starting date is at the earliest convenience, but preferably not later than Jan 1, 2019.

Application deadline: Nov 15, 2018.

However, applications will be screened continuously and a decision will be made as soon as we have found the right candidate. The position requires excellent English writing skills and high marks from the BSc and MSc degree. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
