Integrated PhD Research Fellow in ICT

The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD candidate in Information and Communication Technology for a period of three years. The position is currently located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is as soon as possible or to be negotiated with the Faculty.
The Department of ICT hosts three research groups including 10 Professors, 20 Associate Professors/Assistant professors and about 20 Research Fellows, pursuing a variety of research areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), wireless communications, network administration, and embedded systems.
This open position is associated with Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) and targets at applying AI in medical diagnoses. The research work will focus on the fundamental study in machine learning for reasoning and statistical analyses in medical diagnoses. A successful candidate will engage in the research for contributing the state-of-the-art of machine learning algorithms and performing analyses of the developed approaches theoretically. In addition, the candidate will study the applicability of the algorithms in medical diagnosis in terms of speed and accuracy. The overarching purpose is to strengthen the application of machine learning in medical diagnosis process in order to assist medical doctors for a more expeditious and accurate diagnosis.
An applicant must have completed the first year at Master ICT before one can start with an integrated PhD. The successful candidate will obtain a conditional admission to the PhD programme. The candidate should complete the Master's degree in ICT with average grade of B or better two years after the time when they are recorded on the integrated PhD program.
The first two years after it is recorded on the integrated PhD program should work 50 percent with the completion of the Master's degree and 50 percent with the PhD project. During this period, one receives the payment for the portion of time working for PhD project. In the last two years, this is a standard PhD position and receiving full salary.

Research topics
This position shall address issues related to theoretical study of machine learning and reasoning approaches and their applications in medical diagnoses. Potential research topics include, but not limited to:
- Bayesian and anti-Bayesian algorithms in classification.
- Deep convolutional neural networks for medical image processing.
- Reinforce learning.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in the following areas:
- Bayesian and Anti-Bayesian learning
- Convolutional Neural Networks
- Patten recognition
- Deep Reinforcement Learning
- Stochastic Process
Admission requirements
Applications from applicants who already hold a PhD will normally not be considered.
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in ICT, Computer Science or a similar/related field and document competence in areas relevant to the position. Furthermore, the applicant must have:
- Strong academic credentials
- Written and spoken English proficiency
- Communication and teamwork skills.
Personal suitability, good teamwork skills, inventiveness, and a proactive approach, will be emphasized in the evaluation as well as relevant practical experience. The PhD Research Fellow will be expected to contribute to an active research community that promotes the personal and professional growth of the doctoral candidate. The PhD Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD Programme in ICT as specialization, within three months of appointment.
As a general rule, the following should apply:
- The average grade for courses included in the Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) should be C (or equivalent) or higher
- The average grade for courses included in the Master's degree (or equivalent) should be B (or equivalent) or higher
- The Master's thesis (or equivalent) should have a grade B (or equivalent) or higher.
English skills
Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
- TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 600 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 92 on the Internet based Test (iBT)
- IELTS - International English Language Testing System, with a result of at least 6.5 with no sections lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS accepted).

Remuneration
The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515,
The first two years in code 1019 Scientific Assistant as 50 % part time position, NOK 358 000-366 800 gross per year.
The 3 and 4 year in code 1017 Research Fellow, as 100 % position, NOK 449 400 gross per year.
A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
