Job description

Applicants are invited for a 2 year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in (fagområde) to be based at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, University of Oslo.

The position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council’s SAMKUL program and is dedicated to a new research project entitled From Asia to Africa: Antibiotic Trajectories across the India Ocean. The project follows the production, regulation and export of antibiotics from China and India, across the ocean, to its circulation and consumption in Tanzania. The Postdoctoral fellow will be investigating the production and export of antibiotics and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in China and their subsequent export to India and Africa, analyzing policy, regulation and trade documents in Chinese language, and, if possible, conducting two shorter fieldworks in South China (See the project description for more details). The study will be conducted in close collaboration with a PhD student working on antibiotic production in India (whose research will include fieldwork in Mumbai) and with a PhD student and Postdoctoral fellow working in Tanzania.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a research team consisting of two PhD research fellows, one more Postdoc, two medical students, as well as six senior staff (Heidi Fjeld (PI), Anne Kveim Lie, Ruth Prince, Muhammad Zaman, Christoph Gradmann, Heidi Østbø Haugen).

More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of two years (10% of which is devoted to required duties).

Residence in Oslo is a requirement.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in social, cultural or medical anthropology, Chinese (or Asian studies), history, human geography, sociology, political science or other related disciplines. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• Workable skills in oral and written Chinese, corresponding to HSK 5 or higher
• Previous experience with working with Chinese sources
• Experience with managing both academic and administrative tasks
• Willingness to contribute part of your time to the overall project, including project meetings, workshops as well as co-writing projects
