The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.


The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master’s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty’s medical school and PhD-program. We employ about 220 FTE and have almost 700 Bachelor and Master students. Annual income is about 200 mill NOK, half of which is external funding. Our researchers play an active part of public policy and disseminate new knowledge through many channels.

Job description

Applications are invited for a three-year position as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Health and Society as part of a larger project analyzing effects of primary and municipal care in patients with chronic diseases funded by the Research Council of Norway. The position is within a work package focusing on COPD led by Associate Professor Trond Tjerbo. Starting date is January 1st 2021.

The project will use large-scale register data covering the COPD population in Oslo and Trondheim to investigate the relationship between primary and municipal care services, multimorbidity and the outcomes employment, functioning and hospital use for COPD patients. The project group will apply various regression methods to identify patterns of multimorbidity and health care services associated with particularly poor and good outcomes: i.e. long-term use of welfare benefits or quick return to employment, poor or good functioning, and high and low use of hospital services. Data are linked at the individual level, giving complete health care and outcome histories for each patient. The project is part of a larger project, including collaboration with national and international colleagues. The successful candidate will work in a team of health care professionals, academics and statisticians.

More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of 3 years.

The main purpose of the Postdoctoral Fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

The successful applicant will to some extent have the opportunity to define and pursue her or his own research interests within the scope of the main project.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved
  • Applicants must have the capacity for independent academic research at a high level, preferably documented through publications in international journals
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language
  • Education or experience from the health sector will be an advantage
  • It is expected that the candidate has a residence in Norway during the appointment period
  • Experience in statistical programs such as STATA, SPSS or R is required
  • Experience in analyses of registries or large databases is an advantage

Personal skills

You should be highly motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals and organizations.
