Job description

A position as Associate Professor (position code 1011) is available in the Design of Information Systems group at the Department of Informatics.

The Department of Informatics at The University of Oslo is the largest and broadest academic ICT department in Norway.

It comprises the field of Computer Science and interdisciplinary activities towards mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. The Department currently has over 70 faculty members, over 200 PhD, over 450 master, and more than 1100 bachelor students.

Research

The profile of the Design group is interdisciplinary research on participatory design and the interaction between people and various digital technologies. Knowledge about the effects of digital technologies on individual users and society constitutes the basis for developing alternative designs. The research includes empirical studies of use and design practices as well as experimenting with various technologies exploring new interaction mechanisms, forms and functions of digital artefacts and systems. The research in the group includes theoretical, methodological and practical contributions.

A major research area for the Design group is how digitalization affects public services (e.g., health care, social security). The research includes empirical studies of use practices as well as analyses of technical aspects of automated services, hence we are looking for a researcher with fieldwork experience combined with technical competence. The candidate is expected to participate in the ongoing research in the Design group as well as initiate and lead new research in this area. We are looking for a researcher who can contribute to a continuation as well as a renewal of the Design group’s research program.

Teaching

The Design group is recognized for good and effective teaching, and we therefore emphasize the applicants’ teaching experience and competence for this position. Our teaching is research-based, and we involve students in our research projects. Most of the teaching is project-based, involving supervision of student projects and Master theses until completion. The Design group teaches a large part of the study program “Design, Use, Interaction” (courses at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level) and supervises a large number of Master students. The group wants to strengthen the teaching capacity for the broad basic courses in the Master's programme that build on both technical and social science competence (e.g., qualitative research methods, participatory design).

The candidate is expected to contribute to the Design group’s teaching responsibilities and our continuous work of improving and renewing the curriculum. We are therefore looking for a new colleague who likes to teach and who has experience from university teaching in such broad topics.

Additional competencies that would be appreciated are experience from supervising PhD candidates, writing funding proposals, and research collaboration with external user organizations, such as industry or the public sector.

We offer

  • salary NOK 631 700 – 731 600 per year depending on qualifications in position as Associate professor (position code 1011)
