The fellowship period is 2 years. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution. Deadline for application is 27.11.2018

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Job description

The UiO Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology is awarded a Toppforsk project entitled ‘Functionalizing Defects in Advanced Semiconductors’ (FUNDAMeNT), funded jointly by the Research Council of Norway and UiO for a period of 5 years (2016 – 2020). Toppforsk funding is a targeted initiative for providing substantial, long-term funding to research groups that have the potential to become international leaders in their field. The aim of FUNDAMeNT to accelerate processes towards groundbreaking functionalities with a holistic approach to defects in advanced semiconductors and nanostructures. It links defect behavior with electrical, optical and magnetic functionalities and it targets size dependence of defect properties on nanostructure shape and size. Experiment and theory are closely integrated as one entity, and the project contains three work-packages (WPs); (1) Single-photon source, (2) Doping asymmetry and defects in oxide semiconductors, and (3) Dependence of defect properties on nanocrystal size. In total, FUNDAMeNT comprises 18 person years (PhD students and Postdocs) distributed over the three WPs.

The position is primarily devoted to WP1 and WP2, and related to understanding and functionalizing intrinsic defects in silicon carbide and different oxide semiconductors (ZnO, In2O3, Ga2O3, Cu2O, TiO2 and NiO). Here, non-equilibrium processing techniques and co-doping are expected to be important with an ultimate goal to accomplish light emission. A particular focus of the position is to perform on-line experiments at cryogenic temperatures using a unique setup for in-situ optical and electrical defect characterization connected to the MegaVolt tandem accelerator/implanter in our laboratory.

FUNDAMeNT benefits from excellent infrastructures for both experiment and theory at UiO, where especially UiO’s laboratory for micro- and nanotechnology (UiO-MiNaLab) can be highlighted. UiO-MiNaLab encompasses a 440 m2 sized cleanroom for materials and device processing and 8 laboratories for chemical/electrical/optical/structural spectroscopy analysis in the immediate vicinity of the cleanroom. Some of the equipment is unique, like the on-line setup mentioned above, and the total value of equipment investments exceeds 100 MNOK.

FUNDAMeNT is conducted in collaboration with a wide network of international partners in USA, Australia, Sweden, Germany, Finland and Switzerland. Visits to and from these partners are an integral part of FUNDAMeNT.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. The candidates for this fellowship will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Physics. We seek a candidate with a very solid scientific background in semiconductor physics related to the topic described above, and who has experience in conducting complex experiments and advanced analyses of electro-optical defect spectroscopy data. Publications in high-impact journals, like Physical Review Letters and Physical Review B, are positively regarded.

The candidate will interact closely with researchers and students, therefore collaborative abilities and good communication skills are important.
