The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) is a newly established department at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. ITS has taken over the activities at UNIK from January 2017. The Institute is located in the Kjeller Research Park, which is one of the largest research and development centers in Norway. ITS collaborates with the research institutes at Kjeller, and with industry, while it is also tightly integrated with complementary activities at UiO in Oslo. The department has two sections: section for energy systems and section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies. An important goal of ITS is to provide wider opportunities at UiO within applied technologies.

The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) invites applications for a permanent professorship in Radar Systems and Technologies. We are seeking a candidate with clear scientific and technological visions to further develop this subject at ITS, in collaboration with scientists at ITS and the Faculty, the research communities at Kjeller and with industry.

The vision of the Department of Technology Systems is to create a powerful technology community for research, education and innovation at Kjeller, in close interaction with the other research and technology communities at Kjeller, and tightly integrated with complementary activities at the other departments at the Faculty. The research at ITS has a focus on advanced technologies and components and their integration at the system level. In general the research is at a higher TRL level (Technology Readiness Level) than within the other departments of the Faculty.

The department has two sections: Section for energy systems and Section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies. The scope of the research within the Section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies include mobile and stationary autonomous units and systems, with integrated sensor systems adapted to the units and their functions, and navigation, guidance and control and communication between mobile units. The main topics within the section for energy systems are solar-based renewable energy systems, energy storage and systems modelling. There is significant disciplinary overlap between the two sections.

At present, the Department of Technology System has eight permanent scientific staff, about 40 adjunct scientist mainly from research institutes and industry, and about 20 PhD students. The department organizes a Master´s degree program option in Cybernetics and Autonomous Systems, and a new Master´s degree program in Renewable Energy Systems that will start in August 2019.

Specific information about the position in radar systems and technologies:The position is affiliated with the Section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies. The main research area will be within radar sensors and - systems for remote sensing and imaging applications, integrated into mobile or stationary ground -, air- and space- based autonomous systems. The sensors may also be used for navigation, guidance and control. Industrial and medical applications may also be of interest. The scope also comprises processing of signals from the sensors and sensor systems including sensors systems on multiple platforms, from the raw sensor data till useful information.

The successful applicant will initiate and lead research, will supervise Master´s and PhD students, will teach students at all levels and will further develop the course portfolio within the described subject area. The candidate is expected to take part in the development of new study programs, to initiate and develop cooperation at the national and international level with academic, governmental- and industrial institutions and internally at ITS and the Faculty. It is expected that the candidate will attract external funding for research projects from the Research Council, EU and other. The person appointed may also undertake administrative duties at the department, and can be requested to undertake administrative and other duties at the Faculty.

Qualification requirements

The successful candidate must have formal education at the doctoral level and be able to document qualifications at professor level within radar systems and technologies, and with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Radars and radar systems for ground-, air and/or space applications
  • Monostatic and bi-static active and passive radars and - systems
  • Imaging radars including synthetic aperture radar and - systems
  • Ground penetration radars and - systems
  • Radars for navigation, guidance and control
  • Radar antennas
  • Processing of signals from radar sensors and sensor systems from the raw sensor data till useful information

The successful candidate must have lead research projects and must have experience from industrial and international cooperation. He or she must have considerable experience from teaching at university level, and with supervision of Master´s and PhD students.

The successful candidate must fit with the profile of the position and with the vision of the department.

The research area for the position can include technologies referred to in the Ministry's export control regulations, and the candidate must be able to obtain a security clearance.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficientNorwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
