The Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS) is one of three departments at the Faculty of Education at the University of Oslo.ILS is a leading institution in the fields of subject didactics, school leadership and practice-relevant school research. It hosts Norway's first Center of Excellence in Education, ProTed – a joint project between the University of Oslo and the University of Tromsø. EKVA (Unit for quantitative analysis in education) is also part of the department, as well as four interfaculty research groups (CLEG, TEPEC, SISCO and LEA).


The department enrols 400 students in the Teacher Education Programme (PPU) and administers the university’s Graduate Teacher Education Programme (Lektorprogrammet) with about 300 new students each year.

About 200 students follow the Master Programme in Educational Leadership. ILS also manages the study programme Teach First Norway in cooperation with the City of Oslo Education Agency and Statoil.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research has approximately 40 administrative and 100 academic staff.

A permanent full-time position as Professor (SKO 1013) or Associate Professor (SKO 1011) of pedagogy is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS).

The position is linked to the teacher education programmes at ILS (the 1-year graduate teacher education programme PPU and the 5-years graduate teacher education programme Lektorprogrammet. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching pedagogy with emphasis on the field of teaching and learning for grades 8-13, including classroom management, assessment and differentiated instruction. Contribution to the efforts of ProTed, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education is expected as well.

The successful candidate is also expected to conduct research in the field of teaching and learning or in the field of teacher education through participation in one of the three research groups; Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO), Teachers’ Professional Development and Educational Change (TEPEC) or Challenges of Sustainability in Educational Research (COSER). SISCO focuses on how knowledge cultures and instructional practices promote students’ learning. TEPEC has its focus on general aspects of teacher education in the context of national programs, and on international comparative research on teacher education. COSER’s focus is the relationship between education and today’s complex sustainable development issues.

Main duties:

  • Contribution to SISCO, TEPEC or COSER research groups
  • Publishing in national and international journals
  • Participation in national and international research networks
  • Participation in planning, teaching, supervision and examinations in teacher education programmes
  • Contribution to the development of pedagogy in Teacher Education for grades 8-13
  • Contribution to the efforts of ProTed, the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education
  • External fund raising
  • Research dissemination
  • Administrative tasks

Qualification requirements

  • Documented research competence in pedagogy as Professor or Associate Professor with specialization in either the field of teaching and learning for grades 8-13 or in the field of teacher education. For a professor position, an extensive production of academic publications is required. The research must be of high quality and demonstrate academic breadth and depth, and also reflect an independent research profile and show ability to address novel issues. For a position as Associate Professor, the minimum requirement is PhD or equivalent academic qualifications.
  • Capacity to raise funds and lead research projects
  • Formal teaching qualifications. For a professor position, documented extensive educational development work and educational activities of high quality are required.
  • Experience from teacher training for grades 8-13
  • Documented knowledge of and familiarity with the Norwegian or Scandinavian Educational Systems
  • Advanced Norwegian (alternatively Swedish or Danish) and English proficiency, spoken and written
  • Personal suitability and motivation

The criteria that will be considered are the applicant’s academic, professional and pedagogical qualifications, leadership and administrative qualifications, and personal qualifications including Norwegian, Swedish or Danish and English proficiency.

In the ranking of qualified applicants, the whole range of qualifications will be considered and assessed, including communication skills and personal suitability for the positions.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
