The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere, the earth's surface and it’s interior. The Department of Geosciences is Norway’s widest ranging academic geoscience research environment, encompassing four sections (Meteorology and Oceanography, Geography and Hydrology, Geology and Geophysics, Physics of Geological Processes) and one Centre of Excellence (Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics, CEED).


In addition we participate in other centres and hold several ERC grants. The staff consists of 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, researchers, technical staff and administrative personnel, to a total number of 240.

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo invites applications for Associate Professorship in Rock Physics and Geomechanics at the Physics of Geological Processes section, The Njord Centre, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of two years to fulfil teaching responsibilities in Geomechanics and Earthquake and Volcano Processes.

The candidate will be part of a motivated research team with a high number of early career scientists working together in a highly interdisciplinary research environment at the Njord Centre.

General information about the position

Applicants must document scientific qualifications in his/her field, equivalent to an associate professor position. The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels and to supervise Master and PhD students. 50% of the working time will be devoted to teaching, teaching related activities and, if requested, administrative duties. Teaching is given in English.

Teaching commitments include:

The candidate is expected to actively engage in - and provide integrating activity across - Njord scientific activities, including taking lead amongst one or several of the following topics:

  • Interpretation and analyses of rock deformation experiments: analogue laboratory modelling of geological processes, rock physics experiments, digital rock physics.
  • Numerical modelling of rock deformation processes and applications to faulting and brittle deformation.
  • Role of fluids in rock deformation.
  • Take an active part within the EarthFlows strategic initiative program.

Qualification requirements

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Geology, Geophysics, or Geomechanics
  • Candidates with a background in Earth Sciences and specialization in rock physics, geomechanics and/or computer geoscience are desired
  • Experience in designing courses, syllabi and classroom activities are preferred
  • Competence in experimental modelling is desirable, as part of the teaching
  • Competence with the programming language Python, as part of the teaching, is desirable
  • Additional programming or other numerical competences will be considered positively
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
