Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department is engaged in research covering a wide spectrum of subjects within mathematics, mechanics and statistics.

Job description

The Section for Mechanics, part of the Department of Mathematics, invites applications for an Associate Professor position. The Department of Mathematics consists of six sections and more information about the department and the Section for Mechanics can be found on our webpage.

The Section for Mechanics consists today of 7 full-time faculty members, 5 adjunct positions, 3 post-doctoral fellows and 16 PhD students. Our section works with theory, modeling, computations, and experiments of fundamental physical processes of fluid and solid mechanics, parts in collaboration with industry. The section manages the hydrodynamic laboratory equipped for a wide range of flow measurements. We are looking for a candidate who can further strengthen the research of the section in the fields of wave processes in the ocean space, multiphase flow and/or biomechanical applications within fluid mechanics.

Job description

The open position is in continuum mechanics, more specifically in fluid mechanics and/or elasticity. The candidate must have a strong background in experimental, computational, or theoretical research in at least one of the fields mentioned above (wave processes, multiphase flow and biomechanical applications within fluid mechanics). Furthermore, the candidate must be prepared to give courses within continuum (fluid and solid) mechanics.

The teaching languages at the University of Oslo are Norwegian (another Scandinavian language may be used) and English. The person appointed to the position will be expected to be able to teach in Norwegian and English within two years.

Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of formal basic teaching competence, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years.

The position will involve administrative duties according to current regulations by the Department and the Faculty.

Qualification requirements

To qualify for an appointment as Associate Professor the applicant must have completed a PhD in applied mathematical sciences/mechanics, physics or an equivalent field.

In the assessment of the applicant, the main emphasis will be placed on the documented scientific qualifications including relevant scientific work. The scientific potential of the candidate, as shown by his/her publications as well as the research plan, collaborative skills, international network, pedagogical qualifications and experience, outreach activities and the ability to create a good working environment will be valued.

A research statements where the candidate puts focus on the scientific novelty of their work, approaches and plans, as well as potential synergies and collaborations within the Section for Mechanics will be positively evaluated. The search committee will evaluate the candidates’ scientific work with emphasis on the production during the last five years.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannotdocument basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
