The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics.


The Department has more than 1400 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

A full-time associate professor position in the field of Information Systems is available in the section for Digitalization and Entrepreneurship at the Department of Informatics. The department is seeking a potential scientific leader with clear research visions and educational skills as well as administrative skills for research management, who will strengthen our research and education connected to digitalization processes in organizations, sectors, and society at large.

The Digitalization and Entrepreneurship section conducts interdisciplinary research on digitalization, innovation, entrepreneurship and design of technology with a focus on sustainability. The section’s researchers teach in several study programs: Informatics: design, use, interaction (bachelor and master), Entrepreneurship (master), ICT and Management (executive master), and Informatics: digital economy and management (bachelor, also master from 2020).

Our study programs attract a high number of well-qualified students, and our external collaboration with organizations and industry is growing. The research and education activities of the position should contribute to strengthen the study program Informatics: digital economy and management.

The program has a mixed profile of informatics and business subjects, and we especially seek to strengthen its business, strategy, and economics profile. A successful candidate is expected to conduct research within the field of Information Systems (IS) addressing issues related to digital economy, network economics, and digital platforms and infrastructures. We pursue a model of engaged scholarship to generate relevant research orientations, and aim for publication in premier outlets such as the Senior Scholars’ Basket of Eight journals

Qualification requirements

The candidate must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Information Systems or an adjacent research field. Our existing research portfolio is based on qualitative, empirical studies of work and organizational processes related to digital technologies, specifically information infrastructures and digital platforms. Nevertheless, we welcome applicants with competence in conducting quantitative, computational and mixed method studies. While theoretical and methodological novelty is valued, the candidate is expected to have experience with this theoretical and methodological approach and to engage with and contribute to the ongoing debates around digitalization, digital platforms and information infrastructures in the Information Systems field. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • competence in empirical research in collaboration with organizations around core aspects of the digital economy and digitalization,
  • a scientific track record that confirms capacity to address relevant and challenging issues, including scholarly publications in leading international journals,
  • contribution to the research front in studies of digitalization, digital economy, and digital platform
  • pedagogical qualifications, teaching and supervision experience at master and PhD level,
  • competence and ability to deliver high quality teaching on business, strategy and economics subjects,
  • an active approach to the dissemination of research results and knowledge.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English is a prerequisite.

The successful candidate should have an international profile with respect to the above criteria. The candidate for this position will be selected based on excellence and fit with the section’s research profile.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

The basis for assessment will be the scholarly production of the applicant, other qualifications, pedagogical or educational, the applicant’s qualifications within leadership and administration as well as the general personal suitability. In ranking the competent applicants, the full range of qualifications will be considered and explicitly assessed.
