The Norwegian Veterinary Institute is a research institute in the areas of animal health, fish health and food and feed safety, whose primary function is supply of research-based knowledge support to the authorities. NVI have a free and independent position in all academic questions.

The institute’s headquarters are located in Oslo, but NVI is present throughout Norway with 5 regional laboratories in Sandnes, Bergen, Trondheim, Harstad and Tromsø. Job description

A temporary postdoc position in parasitology is currently available for a period of one year at NVI, Department of Animal Health and Food Safety, Animal Health Research group. The laboratory provides diagnostic and advisory services for veterinarians and authorities, and is national reference laboratory for a number of pathogens including foodborne zoonotic parasites.

The main focus of this position will be development and implementation of in vitro assays for assessment of anthelmintic properties of plant extracts. Additionally, planning and execution of animal experiments can be expected. Through a range of in vitro assays, the specific aim is to test tannin rich extracts of Norwegian spruce and pine against the abomasal nematode Ostertagia ostertagi. This work will be part of the BarkCure project (Condensed tannins from Norwegian pine and spruce bark – antiparasitic effects and potential commercial exploitation), which is an ongoing, international research project financed by the Research Council of Norway. Other partners in the project include the Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture, Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Treteknisk, SINTEFF Material and Chemistry, Scotland’s Rural College and University of Copenhagen.

Further tasks will include support of ongoing research projects through design, completion, and analysis of experiments. Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to assists in writing grant proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for publication. Participation in the contingency plan of the Institute may be required, and cross-disciplinary collaboration nationally as well as internationally is anticipated.

Qualifications

We are seeking an enthusiastic, independent and highly motivated candidate with a background in veterinary medicine and/or parasitology and a relevant PhD in the field of parasitology, immunology, developmental biology or related. You have excellent laboratory skills and solid knowledge of helminthology preferably including experience with in vitromethods such as egg hatch assay, larval feeding inhibition assay, larval migration inhibition assay and adult motility assay. Clinical experience is an asset. Good reporting and writing skills in English are required and knowledge of one of the Scandinavian languages is advantageous. Candidates with less than 5 years of postdoc experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary and terms of employment

The current position is offered as a full time (37,5hr per week) position for a period of one year.

The salary follows the regulations set by the Norwegian State for the category of researcher in code 1352 of postdoctoral researcher (current yearly gross salary 619 300 – 658 300 NOK) depending on qualifications. There is a compulsory membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund with a deduction of 2% of the salary, giving opportunities for favorable loan offers.
