Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Neurophysiology

Deadline 15.02.2019

University of Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked educational and research institution, with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. With its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally recognised research communities, UiO is an important contributor to society.

The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Job description

A 3-year postdoctoral fellow (SKO 1352) in neurophysiology /electrophysiology is available in the Brain Signaling group (Professor Johan F. Storm) at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo.

The position is funded by the University of Oslo and the project also involves other European groups (including Matthew Larkum’s group, Berlin) and Oslo University hospital.

This neurophysiology project focuses on cellular and network mechanisms of conscious perception and neuromodulation within the mammalian cerebral cortex, with particular emphasis on functions of pyramidal neuron dendrites and interneurons, using electrophysiology, magnetic and optical stimulation and recording, mainly in rodent models and brain slices.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

The selected candidate will have a strong background in neurophysiology / electrophysiology. Experience with 2-photon imaging, wide-field imaging of cortical activity, patch clamp recording, magnetic (TMS) and electrical brain stimulation, and/or optogenetics will be an advantage.

The successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary and international team to work on a project that bridges studies of intracellular electrophysiology, brain networks, connectivity, and brain states (sleep/wake, anesthesia, consciousness research) in rodents, humans, and non-human primates.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree in neuroscience, basal or clinical neurophysiology medicine, psychology or neurotechnology
  • Strong background and interest in neuroscience
  • Experience with 2-photon/laser microscopy, wide-field imaging of cortical activity, patch clamp recording, magnetic and electrical brain stimulation, EEG/ECoG, optogenetics, and/or rodent behavior, will also be positively evaluated
  • Solid research track
  • Experience in the aforementioned methods
  • Experience with advanced data analysis and/or computational modelling (e.g. MATLAB, Python, or Neuron) will also be positively evaluated
  • Ability to work independently and take initiatives

Personal skills

  • Strong motivation
