The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. One position as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is available for 2 years, or 3 years contingent on the qualifications of the candidate at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine, Division of Physiology.

The Department of Molecular Medicine conducts research on basic mechanisms of normal cell and organ function, and of disease development.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position within the UIO: Life Science project Debating the Dead Donor Rule [3DR]. In this convergence environment, scholars from three Faculties (Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) will cooperate closely on ethical, clinical, medical, and biological research on organ donation. The project aims at increasing availability and function of donor organs for transplantation and creating societal awareness and debate on ethical issues using Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD). The announced position will be attached to the heart physiology group and will investigate areas of comparative physiology and innate immunity and candidates with background in these fields will have an advantage. The successful candidate should also have good knowledge in cardiovascular physiology and molecular biology.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with the personal prerequisites to carry out the project within the given timeframe. The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their discipline. A three-year position will only be given to a candidate with documented administrative experience and a successful applicant may be subjected to compulsory administrative work within UiO-Lifescience (10 % of the position).

Qualification requirements and Personal Skills

Candidates must have a PhD equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Successful candidates must have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date. The successful candidate fill be evaluated on the background of the following criteria:

Criteria that must be met:

  • Background (PhD) in cardiovascular physiology and molecular biology
  • Good knowledge in innate immunity
  • Extensive experience in research in experimental animal models (both rodents and fish)
  • Documented administrative experience, including organizing seminars
  • FELASA C accreditation
  • Large experience with isolated rodent heart perfusion and isolation of primary cardiac cells
  • Knowledge in mitochondrial respiration experiments
  • Excellent command of written and oral English
  • Good collaboration skills and the ability to work in team

Criteria which is an advantage

  • Good knowledge in standard techniques like western blot, qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy
  • Teaching experience
