The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics.
The Department has more than 1400 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellowship available in the DSB – Digital Signal Processing and Image Analysis Group at the Department of Informatics. The position is part of the joint research project AutoActive.
The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of two and a half years.
No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.
More about the position
The aim of the AutoActive project is to develop tools, methods and algorithms making it easier to carry out research in order to obtain information on human activities based on data from multiple sensors. The use cases of interest are Cross country skiing and Management of multiple sclerosis. A full description of the use cases can be found on the project homepage.
The main target of the postdoctoral project will be to develop methods for automatic analysis of sensor data. The work will cover both practical and theoretical task including sensor placement optimization, data preprocessing, feature extraction, classification, and evaluation and postprocessing. The project will be performed in close collaboration with researches at SINTEF Digital Smart Sensor Systems, the Centre for Elite Sports Research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Olympiatoppen, MS-senteret in Hakadal, and the Department of Neurology at Oslo University Hospital.
The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in signal or image processing, applied physics/mathematics, statistics, machine learning, or related areas. The applicant is required to document that the degree corresponds to the profile for the post. Doctoral thesis must have been submitted for evaluation by the closing date. The thesis must have been approved and defended before appointment.
- The candidate should have good analytical and programming skills
- Previous experience working with statistical methods for data analysis is a requirement.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English is required
- We are looking for a candidate with a dedicated interest to work with the applications in sport science and chronic disease management.
- Besides technical skills, we are looking for a curious, ambitious candidate who is highly motivated to do research and contribute to the work done at our group.
- Communication skills in a Scandinavian language is desirable.
