The Department of Nutrition at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in the Medical Faculty is strongly positioned in international research. It is the largest department of nutrition in Europe associated with a medical faculty. The Department has a high research profile and publishes widely. The Department's employees frequently lead and/or participate in national and international research projects.


The Division of Nutritional Epidemiology is one of the three divisions in the Department of Nutrition. Three main areas of research exist within the Division of Nutritional Epidemiology: Dietary Research, Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health Nutrition. The current position is within the group of Public Health Nutrition. Key areas of research in this group include the identification of important determinants of dietary behaviours through the life-course, the assessment of stability and change in these behaviours over time and the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions and policies to promote healthy dietary habits. Understanding and combating social inequalities in dietary behaviors is also a prioritized research area in the group.

Applications are invited for a 2 year position (100 %) as Postdoctoral Fellow in Policy Evaluation to be employed by the Department of Nutrition, University of Oslo.

The Postdoctor will work in a European “Policy Evaluation Network (PEN)” which is an action under the Joint Programming Initiative “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life” (JPI HDHL) (https://www.healthydietforhealthylife.eu/) coordinated by the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, Germany. The position is financed by a grant from the Research Council of Norway. PEN aims to establish a multi-disciplinary research network for the monitoring, benchmarking and evaluation of policies that affect dietary and physical activity as well as sedentary behaviour with a standardized approach across Europe. The network focuses on evaluation of policy implementation and impact, but not on how policies are developed.

More about the position

The Postdoctor will primarily work on the package 6 (WP6) “Policy in practice – selected case studies”. The case study for which the Postdoctor will be responsible is implementation and impact evaluation of the school fruit part of the “The EU school fruit, vegetables and milk scheme”. The starting date for the position will be 1st August or 1st September 2019.

Tasks:

  • Develop a study protocol for an implementation study of the School Fruit Program in collaboration with the owners of the “The EU school fruit, vegetables and milk scheme”
  • Execute the implementation study of the School Fruit Program
  • Develop a model for impact evaluation of the School Fruit Program and test it based on existing data (i.e. data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study)
  • Write scientific articles and present results at conferences and meetings
  • Collaborate with the other members of the PEN consortium

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD in implementation science, social sciences or health sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology, public health, nutrition, physical activity)
  • Skills and experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Fluent oral and written skills in English

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Previous experience in evaluation, implementation or policy research
  • Previous experience from working on large, cross-cultural projects
