The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere, the earth's surface and it’s interior. The Department of Geosciences is Norway’s widest ranging academic geoscience research environment, encompassing four sections (Meteorology and Oceanography, Geography and Hydrology, Geology and Geophysics, Physics of Geological Processes) and one Centre of Excellence (Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics). In addition we participate in other centres and hold several ERC grants. The staff consists of 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, researchers, technical staff and administrative personnel, to a total number of 240.

Two positions as Postdoctoral Research Fellows are available at the Section for Meteorology and Oceanography (“MetOs”) within the Department of Geoscience, with a preferred starting date no later than 01.03.2020.
The appointments are fulltime positions and are made for a period of up to three years.
No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.
The main responsibility of both positions is to run, develop and analyze output from global climate models, primarily the Norwegian Earth System Model NorESM2.
Fellowship 1 (3 years) is associated with the EU H2020 project FORCeS (“Constrained aerosol forcing for improved climate projections»), which is led by Stockholm University and has 20 partners from all over Europe. The position thus offers unique networking opportunities and requires close collaboration with groups doing research in the laboratory and/or in the field. There will be opportunities for extended visits to partner institutions, and also ample opportunities to attend international conferences in addition to annual project meetings.
Fellowship 2 (3 years) is associated with the ERC StG project MC2 (Mixed-phase Clouds and Climate). The project started Spring 2018, and the current project team consists of the PI, two post docs, three PhD students and one Senior Scientist (part-time). The success of MC2 relies on close collaboration within this team, and it is therefore particularly important that the candidate complements the existing expertise of the current team members. We are now looking for a global/large-scale climate modeler to complete the team.
Beyond the specifics given above, the two fellows are expected to become active and engaged members of the department in general, and the MetOs community in particular.
The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.
To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in atmospheric/climate science. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English is required
The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:
- A strong publication record in peer reviewed journals
- Prior experience running, developing and/or analysing output from large-scale climate models
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively, but also interest in collaborative research and team work
