The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. Applicants are invited for a 4 year position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Department of Biostatistics, University of Oslo. The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The institute has has more than 300 employees and is located in the Domus Medica.

This is an opportunity to join one of Europe's most active biostatistics groups at an exciting time. Currently, OCBE includes nine tenured professors and associate professors, twelve researchers, and several post-doctoral fellows and PhD students, making up a group of about 50. OCBE is internationally recognized, with interests spanning a broad range of areas (including time-to-event models, data integration, causal inference, statistical genomics, Bayesian inference, informative missingness and measurement error models, epidemiological studies of lifestyle and chronic diseases, stochastic models for infectious diseases, high dimensional data and models) and numerous collaborations with leading bio-medical research groups nationally and internationally.

The postdoctoral position is funded by the Trond Mohn Stiftelsen through the project "Battling Pandemic Multi-Drug Resistant E. coli Infections" for which prof. Jukka Corander is the principal investigator.

The position is targeted towards epidemiological and evolutionary modeling and genomic analyses of a large-scale Norwegian national E. coli bacteremia cohort spanning 15 calendar years and thousands of whole-genome sequences produced with both short- and long-read sequencing technologies. The work will be done in close collaboration with the microbiology labs at UiT and UNN who are members of the project consortium.

A main purpose of the postdoctoral research fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their discipline and creating their path to a scientific career.

Qualification requirements

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Candidates must have a PhD in microbiology/microbial genetics/microbial genomics or related field equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Successful candidates must have defended their doctoral thesis prior to starting in this job.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The candidate should also have prior experience about working with thousands of bacterial genomes and the research fields mentioned in the job description, including internationally recognized publications within the area.
