Job description
Applications are invited for two full-time positions as PhD research fellows at the Centre for Educational Measurement at the University of Oslo (CEMO). CEMO provides a stimulating research environment by bringing together internationally renowned substantive and methodological experts. Research at CEMO combines basic research and applications of advanced measurement techniques to solve core educational problems. CEMO also contributes to the development of measurement competence through teaching and outreach. The centre is part of a broad international network and manages several externally funded research grants.
More about the position
The position involves the development and application of advanced statistical methods for use in educational research. Prioritized areas for this position are latent variable modelling, the use of process data in educational assessment (derived from e.g. log files), applications of machine learning in educational assessments and methods for equating and linking in educational testing. Within the position, the PhD research fellow will develop skills in quantitative methodology, statistical programming and scientific communication.
The appointment is made for a period of up to four years (25% of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities).
Qualification requirements
Profile:
- A master’s degree in a field with relevance to research in educational measurement (e.g., social or behavioral sciences, statistics, psychometrics or other quantitative research methodology
- Documented experience with quantitative methodology, including latent variable models.
By the time of appointment, applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD program. This includes:
- Successful completion of a Master's degree with thesis, or equivalent qualifications, with sufficient relevance to the announced research field.
- Minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent on the Master’s degree, and explicit indication of the grade achieved on the thesis part.
Applicants are required to provide documentation of English language proficiency, in the form of an academic degree from an English language university or an approved English proficiency test with a minimum required score. In assessment of applications, emphasis will be put on:
- The applicant’s academic aptitude for completing the research training programme.
- The project description, which must be submitted with the application.
- The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the post, including his/her ability to
- collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community.
- Other qualifications that meet the objectives which form the basis of this type of post.
We offer
- Salary from NOK 449 400 – NOK 480 600 per annum in a position as PhD research fellow (position code 1017). Research fellows are normally allocated pay grade 51 on appointment. The position as research fellow is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale.
- PhD candidates receive a full tuition, a partial fee waiver and five weeks paid vacation. PhD candidates are also entitled to apply for subsidized housing through the University of Oslo, subject to availability.
