A four-year full time PhD Research Fellowship in Immunopharmacology (position code 1017) including 25 % of compulsory work is available at the Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, The Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (UiO). The compulsory work will be performed for UiO:Life Science.

The announced position is part of the UiO:Life Science convergence environment REA:Life: https://www.uio.no/english/research/strategic-research-areas/life-science/research/convergence-environments/realife/. Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that will aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science www.uio.no/life-science.

REA:life (Rediscovery of medicinal plant usage in the “Age of Exploration”: From cultural historical heritage to innovative pharmaceuticals) is an interdisciplinary natural and cultural sciences project that aims to retrieve lost medicinal knowledge through tracing the prevalence of disease and the history of societies’ increasing awareness of epidemiological diseases during the Age of Exploration (15th – 18th century). We aim to identify novel bioactive compounds in historical medicinal plants using cutting edge methods in pharmacology, immunology, and metagenomics.

The candidate will work on discovering novel immunomodulatory plant-derived compounds extracted from medicinal plants identified in historical records, and elucidate how these compounds interact with and modify cells of the immune system. The work will involve in vitro screening of compounds to test for activity within leukocyte sub-populations, pinpoint immunoreceptors involved, and test how selected compounds affect the gut immune system and the gut microbiota after oral administration in an animal model.

The candidate will work in the research group of professor Marit Inngjerdingen at Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Clinical Medicine. The Inngjerdingen research group is focusing on innate lymphocytes and how they may control inflammation and cancer. The candidate will be co-supervised by associate professor Helle Wangensteen at School of Pharmacy, University of Oslo and researcher Bastiaan Star at Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis, University of Oslo.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty of Medicine’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project and to follow the PhD program at the Medical faculty in order to obtain a PhD. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 3 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program.

Qualification requirements

  • Master degree-level education within the fields of molecular biology, immunology, or pharmacology.
  • Experience with cell culture, flow cytometry, and/or immunological techniques is an advantage.
  • Candidates must have fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language.
  • The candidate will work in a very ambitious interdisciplinary setting that will require high flexibility.
