The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.
Applications are invited for a 3-4 year position for a Research Fellowship as a PhD Candidate in protein biochemistry to be based in the Vascular Pathophysiology Lab (Head: Prof. Sandip Kanse) in the Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oslo. This group focusses on understanding the role of proteases in cardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis and stroke using biochemical, cellular and molecular techniques and in vivo mouse models.
The candidate will work on a project that is related to the structural analysis of proteases in blood using x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. The main activities will consist of expression recombinant proteins and their purification, designing and expressing mutants and testing them in relevant assays. Finally, performing screens that will lead to the determination of protein structures using x-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy. The aim is to understand activation and inhibition mechanisms of proteases at an atomic level. More about the position
If the successful candidate is able to teach biochemistry and cell biology to medical students the fellowship is for 4 years with a 25% teaching responsibility. Otherwise, the fellowship period is for 3 years.
The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Qualification requirements
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Biochemistry or related science. A Master’s degree (120 ECTS) minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) according to the Norwegian system or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
- Background and experience in some of the following areas is required: Large scale expression of recombinant proteins in bacteria or eukaryotic cells. Protein purification using FPLC and other techniques. Design and construction of plasmids and mutagenesis. Methods related to determination of protein structure and function. Enzymology.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
