Applications are invited for a PhD position in Ethics and Philosophy of Religion within the UIO: Life Science project Debating the Dead Donor Rule [3DR]. In this convergence environment, scholars from the Faculty of Theology will cooperate closely with scientists doing clinical, medical, and biological research on organ donation. The project aims at increasing availability and function of donor organs for transplantation and creating societal awareness and debate on ethical issues using Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD). We have identified two key research questions for this subproject:

(i) How is the Dead Donor Rule (DDR) and thus the limit between life and death affected by controlled Donation by Circulatory Death (cDCD) of hearts and lungs?

(ii) What are the ethical, biological, and political consequences of introducing cDCD in Norway and which principles and criteria ought to be observed, in particular regarding donation of the heart?

The successful candidate will have provided a research proposal corresponding to the detailed description of 3DR, attainable upon request from Prof. Marius T. Mjaaland (m.t.mjaaland@teologi.uio.no). The researcher will be a member of the research group for Systematic Theology.

More about the position

The appointment is for a period of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12- or 6-month Completion Grant.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral degree.

A research stay abroad during the employment period is expected, but relative to funding available.

Qualifications

• A cand.theol. degree, a Master’s degree from one of the study programs at the Faculty of Theology, or a corresponding type of degree or education. The degree must have been obtained by the time of application.
• Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
• Ability to cooperate and willingness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation
• Emphasis will also be placed on the following in the assessment of the applicants:
  • The quality of the project description
  • Academic and personal ability to complete the project within the given timeframe
