Institutt for lærerutdanning og skoleforskning (ILS) er et av tre institutter ved Det utdanningsvitenskapelige fakultet. ILS er Norges ledende miljø innen fagdidaktikk, utdanningsledelse og praksisrelevant skoleforskning og har ansvar for Norges første senter for fremragende utdanning, ProTed, som er et samarbeid mellom Universitetet i Oslo og Universitetet i Tromsø. Ved instituttet ligger også EKVA (Enhet for Kvantitative Utdanningsanalyser) og fire fakultære forskergrupper (CLEG, TEPEC, SISCO og LEA).


Instituttet har ca. 400 studenter i praktisk-pedagogisk utdanning og forvalter UiOs femårige lektorprogram som tar opp ca 300 studenter hvert år. Ca. 200 studenter følger instituttets masterprogram i utdanningsledelse. I samarbeid med Utdanningsetaten i Oslo og Statoil driver ILS også studieprogrammet Teach First Norway. ILS har ca. 40 administrative og 100 vitenskapelige ansatte.

A position as research fellow is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research related to “Educational Leadership”, which is one of the Faculty’s prioritized research areas.

The position is linked to a project focusing on school leadership practice for quality improvement in Norwegian upper secondary schools. In many schools leadership positions are being re-organized in order to cope with increased expectations and complexities. An important goal within this area is to explore the interplay of policy context and new functions, practices and roles in educational leadership. Proposals which aim to identify the development of new leadership practices are particularly welcome.

More about the position

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance. The place of work will be the Department of Teacher Education and School Research.

The appointment can have a more limited scope within the framework of the applicable guidelines on account of any previous employment in academic positions.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research organizes four research groups. It is expected that the applicant is affiliated with the research group Curriculum Studies, Leadership and Educational Governance CLEG.

Positions as research fellows are fixed-term educational posts where the aim is that the research fellow completes a doctoral degree (PhD) during the period of employment. A prerequisite for the employment is admission to the Faculty’s doctoral degree programme, and applicants’ formal and other qualifications for admission will therefore also be assessed. Research fellowship positions are defined as recruitment posts and represent an important instrument in the sector’s work of generating qualified applicants for other academic posts at universities and university colleges in the long-term perspective. The doctoral candidate is expected to participate actively in the organized research training and in the Faculty’s research community.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD programme. This normally includes:

  • Successful completion of a Master’s degree programme or similar higher education programme in the subject area in question or in another relevant subject area
  • Minimum B grade or equivalent for the Master’s degree (ECTS grading scale)

Norwegian skills at minimum advanced level are required. The applicant must be familiar with key aspects of the Norwegian school system.

Assessment of application

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be put on:

  • The applicant’s academic attitude with regard to completing the research training program
  • The quality of the project description; the description of the research topic, the specific problems to be studied, the choice of scientific theory and method, and a proposed schedule for the study
  • A project description of 5 - 10 pages must be submitted with the application, see guidelines for the project description
  • Documented knowledge of and familiarity with the Norwegian or Scandinavian educational systems.
  • The applicant must master a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish and/or Danish)
  • Good English language skills are also required
  • The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the post, including his/her ability to collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community
  • Other qualifications that meet the objectives which form the basis of this type of post
