The professional community is organised into the following divisions: Welfare and Social Relations; History, Culture and Media; Management and Innovation; and International Relations, the Circumpolar North and Environment.

We are seeking a research fellow in Innovative IT-Education

About the position

Nord Universitys' Faculty of Social Sciences (Steinkjer campus) has an open position for a PhD research fellow in Innovative IT-Education. The position is for a period of 3 years. Nord University requires local residency.

The position is connected to ExcITEd (Excellent IT Education), which is a Center for Excellence in Education, financed by NOKUT initially for 5 years (2016-2021, https://www.ntnu.edu/excited). ExcITEd is a partnership between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nord University. ExcITEd currently has 6 PhD research fellows. PhD fellows are members of the center staff, and PhD projects must be aligned with the center’s activities. The center currently has 5 projects:

  • P1: Increase knowledge about IT and professional opportunities in the population, especially for pupils in primary and secondary schools, with a view to recruitment for IT studies and professions (Project Manager: Prof. Monica Divitini, NTNU, Trondheim)
  • P2: Engaging first-year students in exploring the subject, encouraging good work habits from the first day of study (Project Manager: Associate Professor Trond Aalberg, NTNU, Trondheim)
  • P3: Increase students' motivation through project-based learning, focusing on product and service development - “learning through construction” (Project leader: Associate Professor Line Kolås, Nord University, Steinkjer)
  • P4: Establish an innovative arena for learning, collaboration and interaction across campuses, both for students and employees and develop prototypes for IT tools that can support such interaction (Project Manager: Prof. Rune Hjelsvold, NTNU, Gjøvik)
  • P5: Strengthen the links between education and working life, support continuous learning and reflection. (Project Manager: Associate Professor Birgit R. Krogstie, NTNU, Trondheim)

The PhD project will be carried out as a part of project P3 – project-based learning (learning through construction), with a focus on student enterprises and indie-game development (developing video games without financial support from large gaming companies). The research fellow can work within one or several of the following themes:

  • Independent video game development
  • The maker philosophy / “maker” culture
  • Active learning
  • Entrepreneurship in IT
  • Professional development in IT
  • Learning technology

Project 3 will have both pedagogic, technological, and sociological perspectives, and therefore the position is open to both educators and social scientists.

Qualification requirements

Document and fulfill all requirements related to admission to the PhD program at FSV, Nord University.

It is a requirement to begin a PhD position that one hold a master’s degree in either:

  • Pedagogy or natural sciences education
  • Social sciences

It is possible to apply for this position during the final year of a master’s program that finishes in the spring semester of 2019.

The weighted average grade from the master's program must be B or better according to the grading system in Norwegian higher education, and in general, one must satisfy the requirements for admission to PhD studies at Nord University.

Applicants must have good analytical and problem solving abilities, be motivated to take on doctoral studies, and be able to work both independently and in collaboration with others. Good communication skills, both written and oral, are recommended.

Project description

Applicants must attach a project description with a research theme that is relevant to the topic described above. The project description must include research questions, explain the theoretical perspectives used, and present the choice of methodology. It is recommended that the research problem be designed in dialogue with project manager Line Kolås or associate professor Helga Dis Isfold Sigurdardottir. The quality, relevance and feasibility of the project description are of great importance in the assessment of the applications. The project description must be approx. 10 pages (excluding the reference list), and it must present a study within one of the research topics described above.

A revised project description will be the basis for acceptance to the PhD in Sociology program at FSV, Nord University. Applications for acceptance to the PhD program must be completed within 3 months of appointment to the position.

The doctoral thesis can be written as monograph or a collection of articles. The language must be either Norwegian or English. The main supervisor must be a permanent employee at the faculty. Appointees will participate actively in the academic and research community, and be part of a relevant research group.

The annual salary for doctoral researchers is set at wage level 51 in the Norwegian State Salary Scale, NOK 449.400,-

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. Shortlisted applicants will be called for an interview and trial lecture. These will be decisive for the appointment.

If there are many applicants, an internal committee may be convened to identify the most relevant candidates in the pool. These candidates will then be evaluated by an expert committee. All applicants will be advised in writing of the outcome.

The Faculty reserve the right to not offer employment to applicants who are scientifically qualified, but do not satisfy criteria such as language, pedagogical skills or personal qualities.
