Sexual reproduction in several clonal keystone plants species of northern ecosystems (e.g. bilberry, lingonberry, crowberry) has baffled researchers for decades. Such species invest large amounts of energy in their sexual reproduction (berries with seed), whereas their seedlings are rarely observed in the wild. This PhD project investigates the role of animals (e.g. brown bears and scavengers) in the sexual reproduction of berry species through directed endozoochory (the dispersal of plant seeds via ingestion towards sites with ideal germination and establishment conditions). The project is embedded in the REINCAR and the Scandinavian Brown Bear Research Project.
