About the position

Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (Campus Bodø), Nord University, Norway invites applications for a 100 % permanent position as professor/associate professor with substantial research experience, to strengthen the faculty´s research and study programmes in marine ecology.

The faculty is seeking candidates with a strong ecological background in marine research focused on patterns and processes in coastal systems. We expect the candidate to collaborate and link between the different marine research areas within the ecology research at FBA, which currently consists of molecular ecology, benthos ecology and oceanography. Expertise in complementary research fields (e.g. ecosystem functioning and processes, ecosystem or food web modelling, biodiversity research) would be strongly beneficial. In addition, the appointee should participate in networking and collaboration with the other focus areas of our faculty.

Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA) are located in Bodø and in Steinkjer. You will be located in Bodø and also foster collaboration with your colleagues in Steinkjer.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The position includes research based teaching at all levels
  • The position includes supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students
  • The appointee should actively contribute to the consistent further development of our study programs specifically in biology and ecology
  • Initiating and developing interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with colleagues at the Faculty
  • Participation in the development of externally funded research projects will be expected, as well as furthering research collaborations with national and international partners.
  • Contribute to the development of the academic community in the faculty, together with colleagues.
  • The position includes administrative tasks linked to teaching, research and dissemination.

Qualification requirements

We seek a professor/associate professor with substantial research experience in marine ecology. The successful candidate will possess a doctoral degree in natural sciences, or an equivalent accreditation or standing, and will meet the academic qualifications required for a professor/associate professor.

The candidate should have pedagogical skills and relevant teaching experience.

For appointment as professor, the candidate should possess a good record of accomplishment of internationally recognized research within marine ecology. Experience from grant procurement from national and international funding agencies is a requirement. For appointment to the position of associate professor, we require a Norwegian doctoral degree in relevant field, and experience in research within food animal sciences followed by peer-reviewed publications. Experience from national/international grant procurement is beneficial. If the candidate has a foreign degree, it has to be approved as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Otherwise, the candidate needs qualifications at a similar level documented by scientific production of the same scope and quality.

The successful candidate must be fluent in English and preferably also in Norwegian, Danish or Swedish language.

Professor/associate professor must have a basic formal pedagogical competence, and applicants that cannot yet document such competence, are requested to complete this within the first two years of employment. Nord University offers such training.

Personal QualitiesThe candidate should possess good communication skills, an including behaviour and team building qualifications.

Qualified applicants will be ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Research and development with relevance to the position.
  • Emphasis will be placed on publications within the last five years.
  • Experience with international research networks and projects with external funding
  • Experience from teaching and academic supervision at master and PhD level from the university/university college sector
  • Pedagogical skills

The successful candidate will be a member of a fast growing, successful faculty at Nord University involved in advanced research programmes. You will join the Ecology group, consisting of members in Bodø (mainly marine ecology) and in Steinkjer (terrestrial ecology). The majority of the group members has an educational background in biology, molecular ecology, oceanography, and or nature management. You will be located in Bodø, where you will have access to advanced state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (e.g. genomic platform; mesocosm and miscroscopy laboratories) and a marine field station.

The position is compensated according to government regulations, LPL 17.510, code 1013 Professor or code 1011 Associate Professor. Salary by agreement

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. Short-listed applicants will be called for an interview and trial lecture. These will be decisive for the appointment.
