About the position
A PhD fellowship is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) within GENOME BIOLOGY: molecular evolution of noncoding DNA and RNA.
The position is for 3 years and will be available from 1th March 2019.
The successful candidate will join the Genomic Research Group, who is studying various topics within genome biology and genomic analyses of eukaryotic organisms. These include whole genome sequencing, assembly and annotation, epi-genomics and epi-transcriptomics mapping,whole transcriptome sequencing, and characterization of regulatory and catalytic RNAs.
The candidate will study genomics and transcriptomics features in a unicellular model system (Didymium iridis), with a specific focus on the molecular evolution of noncoding DNA and RNA. The project combines forces in bioinformatics, next generation sequencing, and molecular evolution. Prior knowledge in bioinformatics, as well as laboratory skills within genomics and transcriptomics are essential for a successful accomplishment of the project.
Qualification requirements
We are looking for motivated and creative applicants with a strong academic record and the ability to collaborate with other members of a multidisciplinary team, whilst developing their own research project.
The grades at the qualifying MSc examination needs to be C or better (ECTS scale from A to E) to be admitted to the program.
The candidate should hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences, preferable in one of the following fields: Bioinformatics; Genomics; Molecular biology.
Education and experiences in one or more of the following areas is required: bioinformatics; genomics and transcriptomics; RNA biology; Molecular biology. Hands-on experience in next generation sequencing, genome assembly and annotation, and RNAseq are advantageous for the position.
Proficiency in oral and written English is essential and should be documented either by the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification or internationally recognized certificates, such as TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL or similar. Skills in Scandinavian language is an advantage for the position.
The selected candidate will join the PhD programme in Aquatic Biosciences at Nord University and is expected to complete a doctorate within the three-year project period. The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements of this PhD programme at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture and participate in the training components stipulated in regulations of the PhD program. We offer
The annual salary for PhD candidates is set at wage level 51 (approximately 449 400,-) in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.
As an employee at the Nord University, the Fellow will become a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and will get access to other social benefits. A statutory amount to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will automatically be deducted from the salary.
