A combination of evolutionary potential, acclimation and microbial environment determine the capacity of species to adapt to local selective environments. Low evolutionary potential might be accounted for by regulatory or epigenetic modes of adaptation, while intestinal microbiota assist in the establishment to new ecological niches. The aim of this PhD project is to compare these different mechanisms in two eco-evolutionary models, the three-spined and nine-spined stickleback. The research involves a combination of field studies, molecular work, genomics, bioinformatics and experiments.
