About the position

The Faculty of Landscape and Society (LANDSAM), the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), has a vacant postdoctoral tenure track position on the global political economy of the environment and development. The position is for up to six years with a possibility for a permanent position.

About LANDSAM

LANDSAM has 1300 students and 180 staff. It consists of five sub-units, carrying out research and education in the fields of urban and regional planning, property management and law, landscape architecture, international environment and development studies, and public health.


The faculty has eleven study programs and two research education programs. Some of these are taught in Norwegian with a national focus and others in English with an international focus. The faculty also has a strong research record with a large portfolio of externally funded research projects.


The Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric) is a leading education and research institution in Norway, conducting world class and highly internationalized critical interdisciplinary research across the fields of International Relations, Environment and Global Development Studies, focusing on global challenges on the intersection between social and natural processes.


Noragric is organized in four research clusters on rights and power in development, climate change and agricultural development, conflict and human security, and environmental governance. It comprises 35 academic staff, 30 PhD candidates and 400 fulltime students, and is responsible for one Bachelor program, three Master programs, and a PhD program.

We are looking for candidates with demonstrated expertise at the interface between political economy, international relations, global development and the environment.

Candidates must have an interdisciplinary background and a demonstrated record in research integrating theoretical perspectives with empirical material of relevance to international relations, global development studies, and environmental studies, preferably covering and combining elements from all three.

Main tasks

The position covers research and education. Main tasks are:

  • Initiate and perform high quality research and education
  • Initiate, acquire and conduct research projects with external funding (e.g. the Norwegian Research Council, EU, ERC and/or ERA)
  • Develop, teach and administer study courses
  • Supervision of Bachelor, Master, and potentially PhD theses
  • Assume administrative duties
  • Collaboration within the department, faculty and university
  • Develop or participate in national and international networks

Academic qualifications and skills

The applicant must have:

  • A PhD Degree in International Environment and Development Studies, International Relations, Political Economy or similar fields, defended within the five years preceding the application deadline for this position
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct research across environment and development studies
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines, both individually and as part of a team
  • Excellence in written and spoken English

Applicants who have completed maximum 12 months of a post doc period can apply.

The applicant should have:

  • Experiences in supervision and teaching at the University level
  • Experiences with research projects
  • Experiences with popular research dissemination and communication
  • Connections to professional networks nationally and internationally

Candidates must demonstrate basic command of one Scandinavian language as a working language. If a successful candidate is not fluent in a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment, s/he will within three years of the appointment be expected to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

If the person appointed does not have formal competence in pedagogics, she/he is obliged to complete a course in university pedagogics within two years after appointment.

Remuneration and information

The selected candidate will be appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow, code 1352, wage framework 24, salary grade 59-65 (NOK 523 200 - 583 900 per annum). A compulsory contribution of 2 % is made to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The appointed candidate must sign a tenure track agreement and fulfil the criteria in the national regulation for tenure tracks.

  • A draft proposal for a course suitable for master students in at least two of the master programs at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies.
