This position is associated with the project “DISRUPT: Fighting antimicrobial resistant infections by high-throughput discovery of biofilm-disrupting agents and mechanisms”. This project is funded via the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) and is a collaboration between research groups in Norway (NMBU), Switzerland (University of Lausanne) and Germany (EMBL, Heidelberg).

The overarching aim of this project is to identify novel agents and methods to fight biofilm-relevant infections in the high-priority bacterial pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, UPEC and Streptococcus pneumoniae (www.jpiamr-disrupt.org).

The postdoctoral project will mainly involve development of mutant strain collections in Staphylococcus aureus and other bacterial pathogens, using state-of-the-art of transposon sequencing and CRISPR interference approaches. These mutant strain collections will, in the next step, be used in high throughput screens to identify anti-biofilm strategies and agents. The molecular mechanisms underlying the novel anti-biofilm strategies will then be studied using a range of genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry approaches.

The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by associate professor Morten Kjos (project leader), and will be part of the research group Molecular Microbiology, which have multiple ongoing projects related to molecular mechanisms in the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The postdoc project will involve shorter research stays in collaborating labs.

Main tasks

  • High throughput cloning and transformation in Staphylococcus aureus and other pathogens
  • General bacterial genetics, molecular microbiology, biochemistry approaches
  • Next generation sequencing. Sequence analysis
  • In vitro biofilm assays
  • Writing publications

Qualifications and skills

The main purpose of the post-doctoral position is to qualify for work in high-level scientific positions. A PhD degree is required.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with strong background in bacterial genetics, who is highly motivated to pursue this collaborative project. Previous experience working with bacterial transposon libraries or other relevant techniques will be considered an advantage.

Required academic qualifications

  • PhD degree in a relevant topic (molecular biology, microbiology)
  • Strong research track in bacterial genetics

Desired academic qualifications

  • Experience with transposon mutagenesis, high-throughput projects and/or sequence analysis
  • Experience working with Staphylococcus and/or biofilms

Required personal skills

  • Proficiency in both spoken and written English
  • High working capacity
  • Excellent collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently

Remuneration and information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow, wage framework 24, salary grade 59-77 (NOK 515 200-731 400), depending on qualifications. Seniority Promotion in position.
