The The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences have a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Architectural Lighting Design for Foot- and Cycling Tunnels

About the position

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences has a vacancy for a 100 % position as PhD Research Fellow in Architectural Lighting Design from 01.08.2023.

The position is located at the Department of Optometry, Radiography and Architectural Lighting Design and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Kongsberg.

The employment period will be four years of full-time with 25% teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD program in Person-centred Health Care within three months of accession in the position

About the PhD-project

One of the goals of the Norwegian government transport policy is to increase the modal share of cycling, also through building of long foot and bicycle tunnels. This project will address a knowledge gap in the scientifically verified data required for standards on lighting in long bicycle tunnels required for satisfactory cycling environments there. This will in turn support the implementation of a safe and sustainable transport system, contributing to fewer emissions and less environmental pollution.

The main objective is to build the knowledge needed for the development of future standards on optimal lighting at the foot and bicycle tunnels for visual performance and safety of the users. Currently available standards (based on corresponding European standards) are hardly applicable for bicycle tunnels because they focus either on road tunnel- or on pedestrian and bicycle open paths. Bicycle tunnels differ from those having narrower shapes and sizes, which potentially affects users’ overall space and lighting perception. This project will combine such disciplines as lighting design and IT technologies (VR and Eye-tracking) aiming to provide good visual performance and a feeling of safety in bicycle tunnels through lighting. The candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Veronika Zaikina (USN) and co-supervised by Associate Professor Stuart Gilson (USN) and Professor Sylvia Pont (TU Delft).
