The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences have a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Applied Micro- and Nanotechnology

About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a 100% position as PhD Research Fellow in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems from 01.08.2021.

The position is located at the Department of Microsystems and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold, Norway.

The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems within three months of accession in the position.

About the PhD-project

The PhD research fellow will be part of a team of scientists and engineers from the University of South-Eastern Norway and multiple European research organizations. The position is funded by USN Research-Department associated with two European Economic Area (EEA) research projects. The research fellow will develop photochemical/ photoelectrochemical techniques for renewable energy applications, based on the use of sustainable low-cost materials (i.e TiO2, carbon). The technique will be used for H2 generation through water splitting as well as for converting CO2 into small organic molecules. This work lies within the topic of advanced materials, materials chemistry and physics, and nanotechnology. The research will be fundamental in nature and revolve around the fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials and the analysis of photocatalytic/photoelectrocatalytic reactions. The PhD research fellow will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) equivalent higher education qualifications in photochemistry, electrochemistry, materials chemistry and physics, nanotechnology, or semiconductor physics. The degree must be accomplished before application deadline.

The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems within three months of accession in the position. For admission to the Program the weighted average grade is B or higher is usually required.

Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

The applicant must document that he / she is fluent in English orally and in writing. Applicants are required to provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. Applicants outside the Scandinavian educational system may use the following tests as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS

The following qualifications will be considered as a priority during the evaluation process:

  • Knowledge on photochemistry/electrochemistry, fundamental physics or simulation methods (DFT, FDTD etc.).
  • Hands-on experiences on micro/nano fabrication techniques, such as, wet chemical synthesis, thin film deposition (PVD, CVD) as well as characterization techniques of nanomaterials for photochemical applications (i.e. SEM, XRD, AFM, UV-Vis, GC, electrochemical workstation, 4-probe measurements). Experience with PE/PEC tools is preferable.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 482 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 - NOK 482 200 – 618 600 a year may be considered.

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.

Other information

The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
