Faculty of Health Sciences / Department of Medical Biology

PhD Fellow in Medical Biology - Single cell sequencing as a novel diagnostic method for metastatic breast cancer

The position

A PhD position is available at the Department of Medical Biology (IMB), Faculty of Health Sciences with the RNA and Molecular Pathology (RAMP) Research Group.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The project

The successful fellow will be an essential member of a newly started research project lead by Researcher Erik Knutsen. The project will examen, at the single cell level, the transcriptome and proteome of breast cancer cells present in the regional lymph nodes of breast cancer patients. The study will evaluate the diagnostic potential of single cell sequencing, and will generate basic knowledge about the subtypes of cancer cells present in the lymph nodes, how the cancer cells are affected by the lymph node microenvironment, and the prognostic potential of the different subtypes of cancer cells present in the lymph nodes. In addition, the project will examine the presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cancer cells from the primary tumor in the same patients and evaluate their association toward the identified cancer cells in the lymph nodes.

The student will get a unique training in both molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics during the time course of his/her PhD education: The student will process human patient material for single cell sequencing, run and analyze 10x single cell protein and transcriptome sequencing, and validate results by immunohistochemistry and by in vitro cell culture experiments.

The position's work place

The Department of Medical Biology (IMB) will be the workplace for the candidate. More than 180 staff members from all over the world have their workplace at IMB. The department consists of 13 research groups concentrated on fundamental biomedical research problems, including research on various forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, the immune system, host-microbe interactions, and antibiotic resistance. The department provides education for students studying programs in medicine, dentistry, biomedical laboratory sciences, biomedicine, and pharmacy. The position is affiliated to the Research group RNA and Molecular Pathology (RAMP) under the supervision of Researcher Erik Knutsen. RAMP consist of two professors, one associate professor, three researchers, two post doctors, two PhD students, and three technicians. The project has several active local, national, and international collaborators.
