The goal of the Department is to advance the research and teaching of computer science as a discipline, to demonstrate leadership within our areas of interest, and to contribute to society through our education, research and dissemination.

A PhD position is available at the Department of Computer Science with the research group Computational Analytics and Intelligence (CAI), and the project “Intelligent, automated, networked mobile devices in cyber-physical systems (CPS) for efficient manufacturing and Industry 4.0”.The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD program is three years. The fourth year is distrubuted as 25 % each year, and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. The project

To pursue smart and automated manufacturing that is self-monitoring and self-healing, it requires smart connected dynamic AI-systems with intelligent automated, networked and mobile devices. The AI-system is of multidisciplinary kind and includes different types of hardware, software, artificial intelligence techniques depending on the available parts and the services to be delivered.

The goal with the project is to provide a powerful, smart, and cost-saving dynamic AI-system with centered, ubiquitous and malleable parts (digital products, devices, and services). Dynamic, or so-called volatile, means in real-time construct a task-depended network of devices and deploying it into the factory. It is to be smart everywhere by collaborating with several different hardware and software systems and cooperating to perform complex tasks. By including ubiquitous and malleable parts in the system, it can facilitate an informed and engaged populace.

A virtual copy of the physical device with all parts (so called digital twin) can be developed to then carry out the decision-making and negotiations, which is based on preferences of the manufacturing company and/or users. The solution shall be applied and used in Industry 4.0 but also in other manufacturing infrastructures, as well as infrastructures such as transport, buildings, energy, and healthcare.
